Week 8

PSY Labs Site: Imagination & Cognition Lab Banner Design

Client /Prof: Dr. Jacqueline D. Woolley
completion status: Started Oct 19, 2022
staff guidance: Valerie
description/plans: Create/design a new banner that will be placed on Dr. Woolley’s new website. She wants something related back to her research, yet whimsical and colorful.
To be completed: Oct 31, 2022

  • Ashley (our point of contact with the client) asked for the number 1, exclamation point, and cat to be changed to symbols of a unicorn head, light bulb, and beaker ( or another science-related symbol). These symbols, coupled with the pre-existing ones, perfectly represent the concepts that the lab researches.

Inspiration from Woolley and her team: woolley banner inspo

Current website: https://labs.la.utexas.edu/woolley/

1st Banner draft:

  • After Valerie and I discussed the elements Dr. Woolley wanted in the header, I decided to make the research aspect of the banner more explicit. I also wanted to incorporate some of the symbols (sparkles, thought bubbles, etc.) that were repetitively shown on the inspo pdf. I was also told that Woolley wants something refreshing for the new website, so it was fine to stary away from the old design.

2nd Banner draft (submitted for feedback):

  • Updates: Currently, I am still waiting to hear feedback from our point of communication between us and the client, but hopefully we’ll receive some soon.

Project: Early Voting PSA

Start: Oct 18, 2022

Complete: Oct 19, 2022

Staff Guidance: Maddy

I was asked to revisit the Early Voting PSA now that the early voting period is coming up. The main priority was just updating the existing graphic with new additional voting info provided by Mike. This included making 3 variations of the graphic in both the blue and tan color scheme (6 graphics in total). The main struggle of this assignment was organizing the text in a way that was still visibly friendly, and not too cluttered. I tried to keep in mind the text hierarchy of the overall graphic. Color blocking and changes in font family/color ended up helping in separating text yet creating a cohesive graphic.

STA AUDIO POSTER (final)

Project: STA Audio Team Poster

Start: Sep 13, 2022

Complete: Oct 18, 2022

Staff Guidance: De’sha and Leilani

The STA Audio Poster finally came to a close last week:,) This project took so much trial and error on my part, but I was very thankful for the support I had from my fellow STAs with feedback. The only major change in this poster from last week’s update is that there was a crest change. I also got to learn more about formatting a PDF for printing by Maddy. I also had to import the individual objects into PS, because going from Illustrator to PS somehow messed up the quality which wouldn’t have looked very pretty when it printed (very pixelated).

Week 6

Audio STA Poster (10/10 – 10/13)

Staff guidance: Maddie
STA team members: De’sha & Leilani

This past week was mostly dedicated to wrapping up the Audio STA poster. I loved the constant feedback and suggestions from other staff members (De’sha and Maddie) which helped improve the poster with every new draft. This is probably the most time I have ever spent working in Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator (exciting but definitely a learning curve).

Week 5

(10/5): AUDIO STA CREST

I revised the crest design after having a 1v1 meeting with De’sha and Leilani. The crest needed to be simplified and more icon-like. It also needed more specific references to audio (mic, headphones, soundboard, sound waves).

(9/4): SPRING ’23 ONLINE COURSE HEADER

I firstly sourced a few copy-right free images for possible banner options. Then, with instructions from Suloni, I drafted the four images into headers. I updated the year and added a gradient/blur (with PS help from Adrian). It was overall a fairly simple task, just a little time-consuming to source good copyright-free images and format each of them to the correct dimensions.

Week 4

AUDIO TEAM CREST

(9/27 – 10/3)

These past few weeks have mostly been filled with working on the Audio team’s STA poster and crest. In the beginning, I felt a bit lost (and overwhelmed) since there was a lot of creative freedom left up to me. However, after each feedback comment, my designs improved, especially after seeing some of the other STA’s work.

At first, I was more focused on creating a crest that vaguely alluded to the idea of audio but I soon realized the design needed to be more explicit. After we received more information about the color palette, template, font, etc. I made another crest that included feedback from De’sha and more clearly displayed “audio”. After receiving feedback again (VERY HELPFUL) I made a crest that spoke more to the job of an Audio STA (audio engineer).

Now looking back on my first attempt, I am very thankful for the critiques/feedback that I received. Each time I redesigned the crest, it improved very much. I still have to finalize the crest, but hopefully, this design is good to go:)

AUDIO STA POSTER

Although the Audio team doesn’t have a ton of STAs, the fun poses that I wanted to include made the poster seem “crowded”. De’sha gave me some help by suggesting to mirror similar poses and create an overall shape with the pictures. I still need to implement the feedback, but this is the draft I had before receiving it.

Week 3

(9/21)

Boat Recolor

I was asked to recolor a boat.ai and boat.gif for Maddie and Marianne. There were three suggested colors, so I just made 3 versions of the boat (options!).

Recoloring them was pretty simple, and I also learned a bit more about Adobe After Effects in the process. Recoloring in AI was simple, but AE required some more digging, but in the end it came out very clean!

(9/13 – 9/20)

Design Fundamentals: History and Styles

This past couple of weeks I’ve been working on a basic training assignment in my spare time. I learned more about different historical art movements and was tasked with designing a graphic in my preferred movement. I chose Bauhaus because I liked the geometric shapes, and I recognize it from my past Art History courses. I first followed the Youtube tutorial link so that I would know how to create Bauhaus-like shapes and text. Then, I created my own graphic based on what I learned. I made it about the upcoming album release of one of my favorite artists, 5 Seconds of Summer. Although alongside the tutorial-based poster, mine appears more minimal, I think it contains just enough elements to be identifiable as derived from Bauhaus.
