Orientation Check-up, STA Welcome Back Poster, and Duarte Banner

August 5, 2021 By Athena Zeng

Orientation Check-up, STA Welcome Back Poster, and Duarte Banner

Last week, I stopped working on the Grav/Gantry development, and worked on other tasks like Photo IDs, Orientation Check-ups, and a Return to Office poster for the STAs. New STAs will be coming around August 18, so I checked and proofread the KB and Basecamp links for correctness. I also wrote a bit of advice based on my experiences. I then started working on a poster for the Return to Office celebration, and today I have wrapped it up, I think. This party is in celebration of the official return back to office, which is very exciting, though I have graduated and will not be there haha. I took inspiration from the art for the Madeline series by Ludwig Bemelmans. Each of the characters represents a different STA department, and I think it turned out cute. I used a lot of the skills learned from the winter break project on the wellness video, so I was happy to have more practice with that. I mentioned in my advice how a lot of the skills you pick up in projects are used again down the line, so this was a testament to that. I also began work on a banner for Professor Duarte’s new website. This banner is supposed to represent diverse people, thoughts, and brain activity in a clean and professional manner. I am still in the planning phases, but I will pick up the pace next week. I can’t believe it’s already August! Soon, my time here will be at its end and I will no longer have any active ties to UT. Sad 🙁

Photo IDs & Pirate

August 5, 2021 By Ingrid Alberding

This week, I worked on giving feedback for the typography KB, a bit on the animation script, and on photo IDs. Here are some of my IDs

For this next photo, the original was only from the neck up, so I had to compromise on the size.

Also, here is your weekly Pirate update (she’s a woman of letters):

Photo ID

Photo ID

During the last few mins of work, Valerie sent me over photo IDs to work on. One had to be sent back for a new upload because the photo was out of guidelines and the other one was good to upload. The person in the photo below just had a slight overcast shadow on the picture so I bumped the exposure just a tad so the facial features are more clear in the small 90×80 px profile.

What I’ve Been Working On Latelyyyy

August 4, 2021 By Poonum Mehta

Good afternoon blog,

I’ve been dipping a toe into a few different projects lately.

OCILL is beginning to slow down as Dr. Okur has been busy preparing for the school year (and moving her daughter into her dorm for college hehe) so there aren’t really any updates there.

UTCF had another meeting last week, and I was tasked with imagery to use for ~Traveling Tex~. Traveling Tex will be visiting different French-speaking countries and cities all over the world, and we have a couple ideas for displaying his traveling. One of these is Tex holding a lil flag, another is Tex holding a food item from that place, and the third is Tex superimposed into that location. The third is tricky…right now I’m just finding images rather than videos and even that is very difficult with copyright laws. The French team is just going to have to send Valerie and I to France and Morocco and Belgium to do some fieldwork I think.

I’m organizing all of these images in this spreadsheet (I haven’t gotten to the food item section yet – lotta research shall go into that one)

Beyond this, I’ve been working on creating new post-interview activities, which I would LOVE to share but I don’t want an interviewee to see so just trust me they’re fun 🙂

GRG 401C: Studio Course Graphics

GRG 401C: Studio Course Graphics

In brief, this will be a recap of the course graphics I worked on for this class. I didn’t have to do the whole process of designing these, but I took over what Miguel left off and resized the image for all of the assets, corrected some minor spelling mistakes, and redid the design menu.

Draft Web Service Page In Cascade

July 30, 2021 By Cristina Villarreal Núñez

Draft Web Service Page In Cascade

So, this is a project left behind by a recently graduated STA. The project was meant to be a Cascade page draft that would advertise the web development services offered at LAITS. The original requirements of which, went as follows:

– 4 buttons on the page (wp drupal grav grapes) that link to the appropriate help e-mail
– A write-up too about each CMS? pictures of sites using these CMSs
– Types of services( tech support for existing sites, or does the client need a new site… designed… etc)
– A banner
– More…

Some of these requests have been recently scrapped, and some of the other ones were worked out by the previous STA working on this project. The the following mock-up page for reference.

However, this Tuesday I had a meeting with Suloni on ways to improve upon the current banner, like reducing the height, looking for more/brighter colors, and considering that the computer motif has been a bit overplayed in the web development/technology scene.

So, here are four different banner ideas I have designed for this purpose:

Option 1

Option 2

Option 3

Option 4

Reasoning Behind Each Option:

  1. For the first one I wanted to maintain the idea of “web development” so I added some color and minimal computer imagery, though I thought the browser appearance would look nice and tighten the blank space.
  2. For this option I wanted to focus on the concept of “help,” which is an important task for the web development services page. I was inspired by The Beatles’ Help album.
  3. Next, for this option I wanted to play off the concept of “web development” with a spider theme. [Note: the spider image I used is not free for use, so if we were to proceed with this path I would draw a different spider.]
  4. Finally, I also made this genie related banner based on the comment/idea Suloni shared during our meeting on Tuesday.

Also, within the process of trial and error, I made a really cute face for the spider that I did not end up using, but I think it’s cute. So, if you sticked around for this long, here, have a friendly cartoon face for free.
