Farewell Letter

August 19, 2021 By Poonum Mehta

Farewell Letter

Dear LAITS Team,

Today is my last day with LAITS. I can’t believe how quickly a year has passed! I started off with minimal, high school level experience and have grown so much in this program. I’ve gained experience in photo-editing, animating, project management, s p r e a d s h e e t s, and so much more, but more importantly, this program gave me more self-confidence and pride in my work. The positivity and constant support provided by other STAs and our lovely bosses are what make this program so unique. I can’t express how grateful I am that I’ve had this job and got to work with such kind, hardworking, and insanely talented people.

To Suloni, Maddy, and Valerie, thank you for your motivation and kindness. I have never felt so empowered to say exactly how I feel in a workplace. You all are truly the best bosses imaginable, and I know you’ll continue to make LAITS the best workplace ever when I’m gone.

To Abriella, Estella, Angie, and Athena, thanks for keeping the meetings alive. Good luck filling the awkward pauses in meetings without me.

To ALL STAs I’ve worked with, you have all taught me something at some point or another, and for that I am extremely grateful. It is crazy to me how close I have gotten to you all despite never meeting! Hopefully I can make a visit to the office when COVID is gone…haha…if COVID is gone…

Thank you all and stay in touch,

Poonum

ps. I never knew what Baba meant and at this point I’m too afraid to ask.

I worked on a couple photo IDs last week but Valerie was on vacation so I gave myself feedback LOOOL

I love…having jokes with myself. Anyways, the photo IDs turned out fine:

Course Graphics and edX Icon Creation

August 16, 2021 By Poonum Mehta

Hi blog I’ve been working on a couple diff course graphics, mostly providing feedback but one course needed some zoom backdrop options for the TA so I compiled a couple from pexels / unsplash:

I also created a very simple course card for an edX course that will be taught through Canvas. The card is intended to represent information and resources, so I wanted to use a letter “i”:

This is in the font Didot, which I edited in Illustrator to bring the dot a bit closer to the stem of the letter:

A diff edX course needed a very simple powerpoint slide with a previously made icon, so I created that as well:

Ta Monitor for NTR 306

August 5, 2021 By Poonum Mehta

Hello bloog, today we received a request to create a TA monitor for a course I had worked on A YEAR AGO! So crazy that I’ve been working here for over a year :,) So the original design used this image:

But that image didn’t work too well for a vertical design…I tried duplicating the image and putting two kids on the top and bottom:

But I think that turned out a bit funky. So THEN I spent a loooong time searching keywords like “vegetable” “garden” “hold vegetable” “plant” “nutrition” “nutrition garden” etc etc and came up with these designs:

We’re hoping they use the first design, but provided the second as a backup in case the text positioning is weird.

Fun assignment, I’ve always loved working on course graphics! They require a level of precision that I love to succumb to. Also this is the second course graphic I did EVER so it feels very full circle for it to be my last :,) (probably not my last I still have three weeks and professors be requesting)

What I’ve Been Working On Latelyyyy

August 4, 2021 By Poonum Mehta

Good afternoon blog,

I’ve been dipping a toe into a few different projects lately.

OCILL is beginning to slow down as Dr. Okur has been busy preparing for the school year (and moving her daughter into her dorm for college hehe) so there aren’t really any updates there.

UTCF had another meeting last week, and I was tasked with imagery to use for ~Traveling Tex~. Traveling Tex will be visiting different French-speaking countries and cities all over the world, and we have a couple ideas for displaying his traveling. One of these is Tex holding a lil flag, another is Tex holding a food item from that place, and the third is Tex superimposed into that location. The third is tricky…right now I’m just finding images rather than videos and even that is very difficult with copyright laws. The French team is just going to have to send Valerie and I to France and Morocco and Belgium to do some fieldwork I think.

I’m organizing all of these images in this spreadsheet (I haven’t gotten to the food item section yet – lotta research shall go into that one)

Beyond this, I’ve been working on creating new post-interview activities, which I would LOVE to share but I don’t want an interviewee to see so just trust me they’re fun 🙂

Dell Medical Project Update

July 29, 2021 By Poonum Mehta

Hi blog, Rebekah and Christina with Dell Medical asked me to turn one of their drawings into a graphic. Here’s the drawing:

Here’s my flowchart:

Pretty simple! Now I’m waiting to hear back from the clients about the rest of the site design.
