Thank You LAITS <3

Ahh! Sadly, it’s my last day on the job. I’ve been with LAITS for quite a while, and I’ve had so much fun working with everyone.

Suloni, you’ve been such a wonderful supervisor, and you’ve done an amazing job creating a supportive and enjoyable work environment. I’ve actually learned so much on the job (like I still remember sitting next to Stacy as he taught me basic CSS/HTML. Look how far we’ve come.) But by far the best part of being an STA has been meeting so many TALENTED people. Everyone is so inspiring, it’s wonderful. From listening to podcasts together, sharing memes & cat photos, to drinking Valerie’s various teas- it’s been a great time. Even after having to totally go remote after Covid, the STA space was still the fun and encouraging atmosphere I remember.

With the larger leadership role I’ve taken on in my ministry, job recruiting, and classwork, I sadly won’t be able to balance an additional to a part-time job this coming school year. I also want to focus more on doing art and potentially freelancing (so wish me luck!)

I’ll miss everyone so much! Thanks for being THE BEST coworkers and super cool, funky peeps 🙂

Oh and also, the goodbye card was AMAZING. I appreciated all the kind words and anime pics hehe. It really gave me the warm fuzzies~

Love,

Estella

Trapezites Progress

July 31, 2020 By Estella Sun

More Trapezites Updates!

I had a long meeting with Stacy to get some coding help. I was having an issue with building the logic for the dropdowns. They needed to be filtered every time another dropdown was selected, but each dropdown needed to remain clickable so the user could change their selection. Stacy looked through the code with me and ultimately decided that the whole things needed some refactoring.

We want to take a “object oriented” approach, which basically means that he wants to compartmentalize the various elements (currencies, regions, time periods, etc) into individual “objects.” Each of these objects then should contain functions to build their own dropdowns and filtering logic. Kind of confusing, but basically this change will require me to rewrite a lot of Rodrigo’s code. Luckily, I can still keep a lot of his logic. It’s just a matter of rewriting it to fit the new format.

So that’s essentially what I’ve been doing. This past week, I’ve been working specifically on bringing in the client’s currency data from the google spreadsheet and processing it to fit the logic in the code.

Other than that, I’ve helped make a few new STA sites in Cascade and write up short documentation for Vlabs.

Trapezites Updates again

July 17, 2020 By Estella Sun

Since my last post, there’s been a couple of major changes to the project!

First off, I’ve managed to code the site as a currency converter instead of a coin converter like I mentioned in my last post. I had to bring in the updated spreadsheet data and change up the code to use that data instead.

I also fixed issues where the filter dropdowns weren’t registering. There’s still work that needs to be done regarding those (including searching through the dropdowns and an issue where the other options disappear when one is selected).

Trapezites Progress

I recently had a code review with Stacy to go over 1) the code Rodrigo and I wrote and 2) how we should approach refactoring the HTML before implementing Lesser’s design. We realized a couple of things about how the site is working:

First, the site currently works as a “coin converter” instead of a currency converter (i.e. It converts from quarters to pence instead of US currency to UK currency). Stacy emailed the client about this, and it seems like we’ll be needing to change up the algorithm to make it a currency converter instead.

Second, some of the elements in Lesser’s design (like the addition of 2 time period fields instead of a single one) don’t reflect the current functionality of the site. So we’ll need to clarify some things with the client about this as well.

Stacy told me to hold off on making any big changes to functionality before we get to meet with the clients again. I’m just going to be updating the HTML for now.

Currently, the site looks like this:

And this is Lesser’s most recent design:

Lesser (the designer) send me the UI designs he came up with. I plan on starting to implements the CSS for it next week.

Currently, I’m still trying to complete the making change functionality. I’m having a little trouble, but progress is slowly being made!
