STAs: Student Technology Assistants

Who We Are
LAITS: IT and Facilities Director, Joe TenBarge initiated the Student Technology Assistant program in 2004. STAs are UT students who work on a variety of projects in collaboration with UT faculty and LAITS staff members. STAs assist College of Liberal Arts faculty members and administrative staff with print and web design. From building presentations, to creating audio/visual works, and producing online classes in the LAITS film studios, STAs are instrumental in helping COLA faculty realize their vision for multimedia projects that enhance their teaching and the students learning experience. By the end of their student careers, STAs have portfolios which demonstrate their accrued technical and design skills.

Prospective STAs:

Creative and technically inclined students are appointed as STAs for one year, with the possibility of being rehired as long as they study at the university. Applicants for the program are hired before both long semesters. Interested students may look for postings on Hire-A-Longhorn when positions are available. Positions will have Student Technology Assistant (illustrator or web designer) in the title of the job post.

learning how to use flash animate and starting a russian illustration!

October 10, 2018 By Valerie Tran

So today, I started to dip my toes into Adobe Animate and Tate showed me and Emily the ropes. My assignment was to make a TV remote. I had a hard time figuring it out, but the instructions/tutorial that Tate provided for me helped immensely. I’m a little slow because I’m still learning how the tools and program work, but I think I’ll get the hang of it soon. Here’s what I have so far!

Wow! A remote! Actually took way longer than it should’ve, haha.

It was really hard for me to navigate the site since I’ve only had very, very brief encounters with it. I learned how to make a symbol and how to work within it. I have a limited knowledge on what vectors are, so I’m trying to make everything in limited strokes as to not create so many artifacts/bits and pieces/stray marks. But I did it! I’ll try to be faster with the next assignment Tate gives me.

I also got started on my line art for the Russian Illustration that Kathy assigned to me. I got the green-light to move forward from sketch to line art. Suloni and Kathy both said they liked it, but to make them look at other objects to make it look more natural rather than a posed picture. So I dragged the image of the sketchbook page onto Photoshop and started my line art. I also brought in puppets of Polina and Oleg so that I can work with them later.

Starting on the line art!

It was difficult starting the line art because of the way I sketched this image, ahahaha. I freehanded the sketch and didn’t think about the perspective too much. That made it difficult to digitize it and make it clean. But I figured it out! It looks fine(-ish) now. I tried to add more structure to the market stalls so that I could figure out where to start. Doing this was important because it will help me how to fit the characters within the environment. I also placed Oleg and Polina together because if they’re shopping for candy, I’d like to think that they do it together 🙂

That’s all for this shift! I’ll try to be more diligent with blogging!

update, update, update.

October 10, 2018 By Chloe Kim

I didn’t do anything super exciting this past week… I mainly worked on the AIH website & some photo ID’s.

There’s a whole bunch to do for the AIH website than I thought. It’s really tedious having to download all the files from the old website or make the content into a .pdf/ .doc to upload it to the new website. There are also a LOT of subpages and Stacy and I are trying to figure out how to compress all the information into as little number of pages as possible. Stay tuned…. https://demo2.la.utexas.edu/

Then the photo ID’s!!

CWGS Poster

Final CWGS Poster and DigiSlide

Here is the final poster for the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies Poster!

Also, the client asked me to also make a digital poster to be displayed on the Digi Led Screens in the Union. It’s mainly just the same thing but arranges to better suit a screen.

project: Banner Design & UI design for 15 Minute History WordPress site
Client /Prof: Christopher Rose
completion status: Started back-end work 1st week of October; received design notes Oct. 8
staff guidance: Stacy Vlasits
STA team members: Me, (Potentially Emily/Bridget)
description/plans: Update 15 Minute History banner for new wordpress site, also add few redesign elements to overall website look
To be completed: ~Oct. 31

Some more details about the 15 Minute History project:

I got the design notes that Suloni received in a meeting with Chris Rose, and sh’e giving me the option to ether art direct or complete the banner/UI design myself. I’ve liked managing projects (like what I’m doing for vlabs and cascade), so I’m leaning towards  trying my hand at art directing. I’m considering asking either Emily or Bridget to work on this project, so I’ll be asking them soon. Once I’ve settled this, I’ll be emailing Chris about starting the design process.

The design notes stated that Chris wanted a grayscale banner with a grid of pictures (similar to the Harry Ransom Center banner), but lighter and brighter. Suloni also mentioned that Chris knows photoshop, so we’ll be giving him a .psd file that he can edit. It’s actually pretty cool how he has an eye for design (example of his personal website below); it should make the whole design process smoother.

Other projects:

As for vlabs, progress is coming along nicely. Special shoutout to Melissa for already finishing two labs! No significant problems have really come up, so not much to report here!

Cascade re-documentation is taking a backseat with many STA’s working on projects for Stacy. Once, we get a little farther in vlabs, I’ll probably try to pick up the pace for Cascade.

Week of 10/8

October 9, 2018 By Melissa Lam

Week of 10/8

This week I finished another V Lab! As a completionist, it stresses me out that I can’t incorporate a lot of things into the new site. But I think I’m finally done with V Labs for now, even though the project as a whole is still ongoing.

I also edited some COLA IDs:

That last ID is one of my faves; the color of the man’s shirt compared to the background and the color of the flowers just looks so good!

Finally, I got to do some animation work again (yesssssss) and my task this time was to make the angles for the young child of the Glasses Boy and Awake Girl that was the crawling baby from last time (boy they sure grow up fast!)

She’s basically a combination of her dad and mom, so she has components from both parents in her design. Also I’m assuming she likes cats.

COLA IDs, STA patches, V-labs, and edits!

October 9, 2018 By Valerie Tran

I haven’t been very diligent in updating my blog, so I should probably put everything that I’ve done since my last post!

I worked on this week’s COLA IDs and knocked those out for the day. For the first client, I brought out a lot more color in his face and brightened up the image for both sizes. For the second client, I tried to tone down the redness, took out some warmth from the overall picture for both sizes, and brightened up both images.

The COLA IDs I did for this week!

I also submitted my STA patch designs (though conceptually they’re not very different from one another, lol). Suloni and I both liked the brain design I did for the retired Psych CE project. Suloni suggested that I enter into the STA Patch competition with this brain drawing, and I was like, “sure”. So here it is! They’re essentially the same design, just with different colors. I wish that I changed them up

Wow! Patches!!!

I also finished one of the Russian Illustration edits! I’m currently waiting for feedback on it. I colored the skin. and clothes of the people in the background. While I was coloring, I decided to also re-outline them for better visibility (so I can color better lol) and to make the image look more crisp and clean.

Look at all those colorfully dressed people!

I also sketched out an illustration for approval. It’s Polina, Oleg, and Antonia visiting the market!

Sketch of Polina, Oleg, and Antonia going to the market!
