Week 31 – Thang Truong

October 19, 2023 By Thang Truong

Week 31

Project: Linguistics Language Center

Started on: Oct 13, 2023

Staff Guidance: Chris

Description: The project aims to access the routes of each website page in Laravel PHP to examine whether there should be any optimization of the database query structure. Currently, the recommended practice is to ask for a table and database before rendering the view to ensure that the client server does not need to make a lot of requests back to the database server.

I was able to access almost all of the routes on the website except the route that starts with ‘lexicon/{lex_slug}’.  I tried a lot of ways to examine the lex slug in the route; however, it was very hard for me to access the database and query. Therefore, I think I need to ask Chris how to do this when he gets back.

The results of the routes I have examined so far are pretty good with an average of 14 queries with a range from 5 to 22 queries. There is one route that produces 63 queries, so I may need to ask Chris to look at this route again.

Texas German Retractable Banner #10

Client/Prof: Margaret Blevins
Completion Status: Started on Sept 21
Staff Guidance: De’sha

Finished up a new draft of the banner:

Icon Training

Completion Status: Started on October 11 (?)
Staff Guidance: De’sha

I worked to design icons with the McCombs school of business in mind as the style, here’s what I came up with:

Logo Training

Completion Status: Started on September 20

I’ve been working more on my logo design training and decided to take a step back and figure out ways to make it a single color while incorporating my original font and ideas. I feel like in these the contrast between the L and the C isn’t quite enough so it starts looking like an LE or some kind of indistinguishable text, but I think I like this direction a little better.

Week 8 10/9 – 10/13

October 17, 2023 By Lila Mali

A lot of UTFC work, but some other fun things too!

UTFC

I’m pretty much on the final steps of completing the UTFC 9.3 module. I uploaded all the approved images to box, updated them in the provided powerpoint, and now it’s off  to be reviewed.

While it wasn’t a project that requires any artistic outlook or creativity, it was a very simple and somewhat relaxing project to work on. I’m also glad that now that I have experience with the image finding portion of it, I can be helpful with more tasks involved with it in the future.

New Training Unit: Design History

While I didn’t complete this training this week, I learned more about where design elements come from and trends in design through history. For the training, we have to emulate our favorite design trend in history. I’m doing 2 as I like the Dada collages a lot but need more practice in Illustrator.

I’ll be able to show off those projects next week!

2023 Caricature

I was inspired by Lorena to update my caricature for 2023! Although not much has changed about me, I like this outfit more because purple is my favorite color! I also updated my hair (a very minor change but it makes a difference to me!)

Week 8 (10/9 – 10/13)

October 16, 2023 By Adriana Hermoza

Fall 2023 GRG Flyer Promo

Start: October 9, 2023

Completed: October 23, 2023

Description: I had to design a digital flyer promotion for the Department of Geography & the Environment. They wanted to advertise some of the courses they offer and display this promotional graphics on campus. My first iteration, I tried out some new designs and colors. I decided to place the venn diagram at the center of the three different images, each depicting the word inside.

Afterwards, a tried out a new design that changed the colors and organization of the information. I tried out two color for the lines separating the images, black and white. Afterward I recreated the icons for the venn diagram in illustrator to match the ones provided in the files since I couldn’t find them online.

After the previous flyer design was completed, I was assigned another flyer for GRG 356T. This one had 6 images that needed to be included in a grid-like manner. For my first iteration I chose a color scheme consisting of light and dark blues with a light tan accent color. However, after brainstorming some more, I decided to change the color scheme to a darker blue and orange to complement the images and minimized distractions in the overall flyer design. Additionally, on the second iteration I increased the font size and made all the text white unless it was information that needed to pop.

For my final iteration, I realigned the texts to create a smoother appearance, resized some objects, and moved the color accent bar to the bottom.

Week 7 (10/2 – 10/6)

9.4 Environmental dangers

Start: October 2, 2023

Completed: October 27, 2023

Description: I was assigned another UTCF image tracking assignment that dealt with Environmental dangers. This time I had to browse for images in pexels, pixabay, or unsplash that matched the vocabulary word given. I quickly realized that some words were difficult to find images for, due to its abstract nature/concept. However, after getting some feedback, I found images that matched the vocabulary word.

Intermediate Training: Brochure

Start: October 2, 2023

Completed: October 27, 2023

Description: After reading through the basecamp instructions on how to create and design brochures, I chose to create one for the LAITS Software Development Services. I first created a canvas and divided it into 6 sections. I did a rough sketch of the design and came up with the first iteration.

After receiving feedback, I corrected some spacing errors, aligned texts, and added some movements by changing the shapes of certain objects. I also tried out different styles to order the information on the inside of the brochure. Nevertheless, I encountered some problems with the excess negative space at top, the alignment of certain texts, and the quality of some icons.

For the final iterations, I image traced the icons and also recreated them in illustrator to get improve their quality which served as practice. I reorganized the information found on the inside of the pamphlet in ascending order while keeping the same amount of spacing throughout. Additionally, I lengthened the top shape containing the title “Services we offer” to span across the entire length of the pamphlet’s inside which combined with the ascending bullet points, filled in more space and reduced the negative space. Finally, the last thing I edited was the bottom portion of the pamphlet by adding a bar, another organic shape, or leaving it blank.
