Week 6

August 3, 2022 By Luisa Matzner

This week was mainly focused on the GOV 310L graphics and finishing up the last of the NTR 306 graphics, so once again, a full week of course graphics. NTR 306 is waiting for final approvals, which is exciting!

Here are the latest GOV 310L graphics.

I’ve also begun storyboarding for the stingers for GOV 310L.

That’s it for this week!

Week 7/25 – 7/27

August 1, 2022 By Leilani Cabello

The projects I had this week consisted of mostly the American Studies Banner project and some UTFC assignments. At the beginning of the week, I made a set of banners along with some stock images searching for the UTFC modules.

For the American Studies Banner project, the primary purpose was to design a banner to go on their bulletin board in Burdine Hall. Along with the banner, the bulletin board would showcase (on 8.5×11″ papers) AMS classes & faculty. The hope of the bulletin board is to raise awareness about AMS, which is a somewhat minor major, and lead to increased enrollment. The banner itself should be eye-catching and appealing to students passing by. At first, I was testing out what direction would be best to head into, down below were my first drafts.

After receiving feedback, I chose a direction and kept the theme of whimsical, colorful, and playful in mind. I tried testing different colors and fonts to see what worked and what didn’t.

Soon after all the plentiful advice and tips I received from my art director, I was able to solidify a design. Both the client and LAITS went with the first banner in the set below!

Aside from LAITS, I made some edits to a concert poster I made, and is now up and printed around my hometown! 🙂

Oh yeah and here’s a recent drawing I just finished!

Week XLIV

July 28, 2022 By Adrian McKee

Week XLIV

Another slow week of many small tasks.

Course Graphics – EEV Computational Biology

This was a rush job to be done before Thursday morning. Really the only urgent thing was the studio backdrop, since Thursday was filming.

The studio wanted a muted blue collage similar to another course.

The images selection itself was a little limited (a lot of computer code and graphs) so this was my very first draft.

I searched for some more  sciencey images on my own (thanks, Wikmedia Commons) and smudged them on top similar to the French textbook collages, at Maddy’s suggestion.

However I wanted to try a properly layered collage, and redid it all from scratch.

Then, I lightened it a bit and removed the watermark (as requested).

I’m pretty happy with how it came out! I haven’t seen my final draft in the studio but this is how tests looked for some midway drafts.

Photo IDs

I haven’t been logging these on my blog weekly, but since this week is slow, I’ll post a few batches.

Of 9 assigned, only 2 had hiccups! There are 8 here because one of the hiccups was the same person being assigned twice. That’s much better than the 50+% rate of unusable submissions a few weeks ago.

Week 5

July 27, 2022 By Luisa Matzner

This week was the week of class graphics! I made much progress on the nutrition class’s graphics, finishing out the Canvas graphics. However, I still have a few more details to iron out on the TA monitor. I got the opportunity to see how class graphics look on the studio scene. That will definitely come in handy for future classes! Here’s how they are looking right now.

I also began work on graphics for GOV 310L. I’m really excited to give this class a new look! Here’s a moodboard for the direction in which I want to take the visuals.

I also worked a bit on the French Lingco banners and sourcing images for the class. That’s it for this week!

Updates 7/18 – 7/20

July 27, 2022 By Leilani Cabello

This week I got to start on work for my first client along with some graphics for the UTFC (UT French Course) project. For me, this week’s projects were simple and quick! In regards to the project I had to do for the client, all I had to make was an editable PDF for physical cards, each hoping to be crafted on a room-by-room basis. Basically, I had to make info cards so that a unique QR code may be placed in them, according to the client. The card on the top was an approved design while the bottom design was an alternative layout I thought of!

As I worked on the Helpdesk Placement Card Project I also made some official backdrops for the UTFC course!

Along with a finished training course from earlier in the week.

Week XLIII

July 21, 2022 By Adrian McKee

Week XLIII

This week was a lot of assorted small tasks, workflow optimization, and a casual potluck!

Texas German Dialect Project

Maddy pointed out to me that the image arrangement on my first draft was rather haphazard, with a diagram of her eye flow.

I tweaked the layout and made the images flow in a shape sort of like a tilted ‘7’.

I also learned that some images are too big to be attached in emails, that Outlook tries to make you use its own cloud service that doesn’t work, and that ideally we should send clients a Box link to exports. The more you know!

Intermediate Training: Brochures

After much deliberating and browsing Behance brochures, I started to settle in a specific direction and drafted this:

The idea for monochrome photos came from one Behance example:

But I’m still not sure how to actually design things that look as ‘cutting edge’ as stuff like this. I’ve picked up on smaller details, like papery textures and subdued palettes, but I’m a long way off from anything like that coming naturally.
