Week 10

Project: French Connexion

Start: Oct 21th 2022

To be Completed: N/A

Staff Guidance: Maddy

Link to UTFC Website: https://frenchconnexions.net/

This week I schedule meeting with Marianne to talk about how to implement my design better into the web development.

Project: CTX Retold

Start: September 21th 2022

To be Completed: N/A

Staff Guidance: Maddy

Link to Prototype

I continue to update the design due to the new feedback from Celeste.

Changes:

  • Body Font: Lato, Extra Bold
  • Quote Font: DM Serif Display
  • New Maroon Color: #881A1D
  • Black Background Color: #313131 + #000000 banner color

Project: Beyond Sweatt v Painter Presentation

Start: Oct 21th 2022

To be Completed: N/A

Staff Guidance: Maddy

This project is to redesign the powerpoint for Beyond Sweatt v Painter Presentation for Olivia Muna with the consistent typography and color palette choice. Since there are lots of historical documents insert into the powerpoint, we decided to highlight on the important texts and create a clearer and bigger typed-text block for better understanding. We also minimized the number of the documents that showed on one page so the audience are able to focus better. At the same time, we insert the photos of either author or related figures for the documents to ensure the storytelling.

Project: Green Screen 8.3B

Start: Nov 14th 2022

To be Completed: Dec 1st 2022

Staff Guidance: Yazz and De’sha

I was asked to find pictures of foods and drinks for the UTFC projects, prioritizing pictures from Antananarivo and Madagascar.

Project: Elements and Principles of Design

Start: Oct 20th 2022

To be Completed: Nov 15th

Elements and Principles of Design

I learned several design principles from this training:

  • Repetition
  • Rhythm (similar visual elements but the different distance and frequencies create joy)
  • Movement (arranging the composition in such a way that the objects lead the viewer’s eye along a path)
  • Balance
  • Proportion/Scale
  • Negative Space
  • Contrast
  • Emphasis
  • Variety
  • Unity/Harmony (taking different elements in a composition and creating visual similarity by the way one arranges them)
  • Hierarchy

When I design, I should be careful with the rhythm, balance, proportion and unity.  In order to emphasize one visual element, I can utilize contrast, emphasis, hierarchy by changing color, size and volume. Movement and negative space can lead the viewer’s eye and create excitement. One design work should consist of several design principles so the image would balanced and noticeable.

Week 10

November 10, 2022 By Marissa Devivar

Week 10

Project:  BEYOND SWEATT V. PAINTER
Client: Olivia Mena
Started: Nov 7, 2022
Staff guidance: Maddy
STA team members: Leilani, Carrie, and De’sha

Description/plans: Researcher, Olivia Mena, needed our help with data visualization/ presentation design for a PPT: History of Race, Science, and Segregation at the University of Texas
Completed: Nov 11, 2022

This firstly involved choosing an overall color palette/scheme. Then we reorganized/composed pictures with their respective paired bodies of text in a more visually pleasing manner. Most of the pictures were provided by Oliva in the draft PPT, but some pictures had to be sourced or edited to match the aesthetics/dimensions of the presentation. There was a combination of historical documents, photographs, and text that needed to be cropped and blocked on each slide into a cohesive narrative for Olivia to present.

From what I was told about the presentation from Maddy, (I wasn’t able to attend the meeting with Olivia herself) it sounded very interesting! I always like to hear more about the history of UT, especially if it is clearing up misinformation about the history of our school:)

Election Videos

Not much was going on this week besides working on the Olivia Mena PPT, but Mike sent out these finalized videos for the Election Day PSAs Maddy and I worked on. So cool to see how our work crosses over with the Audio team!

Marketing Graphics

Marketing for UT Summer Courses

Freshmen Postcard

I’m currently working on the marketing campaign for UT summer courses. I was introduced to the project and to the marketing team last week, and gotten started on updating and redesigning the assets. This postcard is one of the print ads directed at freshmen to take summer classes at UT. I began with a wide variety of layout options, then narrowed it down to a few. I’ve been iterating on the color and text so far.

Original postcard

Screen Ads

These graphics will appear on screens in UT buildings all over campus. The edits here are pretty minimal, mainly just updating dates and classes available.

Week LI

Week LI

Flyer GSD360 for Spring ’23

This week, I started off with the original grid concept, at a tilt.

I also tried a tilt (shear), but didn’t love how the photos looked, and wasn’t sure if I wanted to spend the time tilting every individual frame separate from the clip-masked photo.

My other idea was to manipulate the photo background and caption block separately, which led to this. I made the photos smaller, tiled, and gradient-mapped.

Further clarification led to keeping the bahausy geometric elements and simplifying the design, plus making a wider one for screens.

GOV 312L US National Security

Project: Course Graphics – GOV 312L US National Security
Client /Prof: Jason Brownlee
completion status: WIP
staff guidance: Maddy K, Suloni robertson
STA team members: N/A
description/plans: TBA
To be completed: 12/5/2022

For this course, so far all I’ve done is draft some studio backgrounds. The professor wanted something that shows contrast between inconsistent points in American foreign policy, so the photos such as Rumsfeld greeting Sadam and the gulf war are juxtaposed. I played with sepia and greyscale, and various types of noise texture.

The studio team helped us test the backdrops, and we’re probably going with the noiseless sepia (now a purpleish-grey).
