HealthyHorns Sleep Assessment

April 1, 2021 By Relena Lai

The questionnaire has an official name now! It’s called the HealthyHorns Sleep Assessment.

One of the features of the assessment will be a sleep chart that displays a student’s sleep schedule for that week. Students can record what times they were asleep including any naps taken throughout the day.

Texas Global Powerpoints

March 31, 2021 By Poonum Mehta

Been working on reformatting some powerpoints for Texas Global Innovations Labs. Here are some of my favorite transformations!

The original slide had a mixture of images and clip art, along with a list of trade secrets:

I found some icons from The Noun Project, placed a color overlay on them in photoshop, and BOOM:

For this slide, the map and pins seemed super outdated. I found a map icon and pin icon on the noun project, then placed the original photo in the background on photoshop to ensure the new pins matched up. After I aligned the pins, I removed the image from the background, and BAM:

The original slide wanted to indicate that hearing aids, visual aids, and any third sense will grab 90% of a person’s attention. It also wanted to indicate how the senses attracted attention, with visual and auditory holding more weight over the rest.

I decided to split this slide into two, beginning with the percentages of information retention, then with the senses (it took Valerie and I a bit to get this first one adjusted correctly lol):

I just submit the last powerpoint for revision, which concludes my second powerpoint project! These are pretty fun, but some times the original slides have so many layers on top of each other that parsing through the content becomes a bit tedious. I definitely enjoy the template-making / reviewing process a bit more, but y’all know I love my repetitive tasks <3

WP Documentation Briefing

WP Documentation Briefing

Athena recently joined the WP Documentation team, so yesterday we had a meeting to catch her up on what we’ve been working on. Here are some screenshots of what we’ve discussed.

Athena was already able to make some great progress on the documentation, so I think we’ll finish this documentation soon! :).

Ethics Page Cascade Help Request Update

March 30, 2021 By Thuy H Nguyen

Ethics Page Cascade Help Request Update

Cristina and I worked together on the Cascade Help Request for the Ethics page a while back, and we recently heard back from the client saying that she was able to implement our suggestions, which is great! The site looks really nice right now, so I’m really glad. She also followed up with a small issue of the text not aligning correctly.

I reached out to Jake for help because it seems like there wasn’t any weird padding when I view this with the Firefox. Jake was able to identify the weird padding on Chrome, which turned out to be random because the text content was centered in the cell. I have no idea why this doesn’t show up in Firefox, but adding a vertical-align:top; to the cell format helped.

I drafted out the email for the client and sent it off this morning.

Lesson 7: Logos

March 29, 2021 By Cristina Villarreal Núñez

Lesson 7: Logos

Long time no see! So far we’ve had a great first week returning from Spring Break and are now starting a new refreshing week. Only a few more weeks till the semester ends, so let’s give it our best all, shall we?

One of the biggest projects I was working on before the break was the Concepting and Sketching section of Lesson 7 on Logos. As you might remember from my last post, the purpose of this Lesson creation project is to make a bunch of whole new lessons and tutorial specifically on different topics future STAs will learn from and use as reference when getting to work on these projects. As you can see, this is the lesson 7 out of 9 or 10 that will be part of the new STA curriculum, and Lesson 7 is all about logos.

This specific lesson was divided into thee or four lessons, but I only partook in the creation of one of them with a fellow STA. We both devised a three part plan for this section that went as follows:

Part 1 – Logos 101

In this part we the basics of logos, as in a brief explanation on how they are formed by images, texts and shape, how they not only represent a brand’s image and personality, but also it’s heritage, how they must be timeless and adaptable, finally explaining a bit about the different styles of logos mascots, emblems, and pictorial marks.

Part 2 – Concepting and Sketching

In this part we went through the importance of minimalism, symmetry (and the different kinds of symmetry), and proportions in logo concepting and sketching. We also included a useful list of general logo do’s and don’ts addressing all phases of design like research, acknowledging trends, accounting for responsiveness, etc.

Part 3 – The Activity

This is the part I personally worked on the most. For this part I wrote down a general explanation on the different components of a logo lockup and the vocabulary involved. Then, I created a 9 step tutorial –including examples that I drafted myself– on how to design an original logo lockup: brandmark, work/lettermark, how to add it on different items of merchandise, how to turn it into a favicon, and finally how to add it all into a mockup website. At the end I also provided a helpful list of tips on logo design provided by a fellow STA. These are steps of my personal design:

We are still in need of feedback and are yet to draft the KB for this section of Lesson 7, so stay tuned for updates.

AMS 310 PowerPoints

March 26, 2021 By Athena Zeng

AMS 310 PowerPoints

I pretty much focused on one thing this whole week, which was the AMS 310 PowerPoints. It’s a similar type of work to the Henderson powerpoints with Poonum. We are transferring the content from an old set of powerpoints to a new template that Abriella made. This standardizes the content and hopefully improves the readability of the slides. It’s a pretty repetitive and standard process; there are just a lot of powerpoints. It’s kind of relaxing. But in the process, I end up reading a lot of the content, which is heavy sometimes. America is scary.

Here are some examples.
