AFR 303 Graphs

September 27, 2021 By Abriella Corker

AFR 303 Graphs

Project: AFR 303 Course Graphs
Client /Prof: Dr. Colon and Dr. Gordon
Completion status: Started September 21
staff guidance: Maddy Kaniewski
STA team members: Abriella Corker, Rachel Sacks, and Sheryl Long
Description/plans: Professor Gordon and Colon would like visual representations of content and stats discussed within their powerpoint lectures to be made into simple graphs and chart to enhance learning via a visual aid.
To be completed: September 27th

Maddy and I started off with designing and deciding elements of a template together. All the slides in the PowerPoints are on a black ground so we designed out template with that constraint in mind.

Once the template was finished, Sheryl, Rachel, Maddy, and I got together to discuss the first set of graphs to be made and went over together ideas on how to best represent the information within the slides. Here are what my two slides ended up looking like. They are two different shades of black background. Ignore that, it was just so I can work on top of a dark background. The actual assets were exported transparent for the professor.

Here is a chart that was already made but needed to be re-styled:

This is the image they provided as an example of said style…

… and these are the traffic lights I ended up designing:

Weekly update

September 24, 2021 By Megan Fletcher

This week, brrrrr

This “cold” front was an absolute godsend. I got to read for about 30 minutes before my shift on the Gearing patio, and it was awesome.

This week, I finally finalized my quiz stinger animation and I worked on revamping the photo ID training, a display for the GRG department, the new PR project, and photo IDs.

Photo ID training

I’m glad we’re updating the photo ID training and client communication — there’s a lot of situations I run into with them that aren’t necessarily spelled out in the training. Knowing how to handle these comes with time and experience, but it’s always nice to get guidance early on. Here’s one thing Suloni pointed out that I added:

The top photo is my original 200×300 edit, before Suloni pointed out that Naval Science faculty (like this man) have medals that should probably be visible in the ID. I went through and updated the other Naval faculty with this format, but it’s a good example of when to not follow the guidelines exactly.

Quiz Stinger

I also finalized my quiz stinger:

GRG Display

Project: Display for GRG dept
Client /Prof: GRG department
completion status: Started Sept. 22 2021
staff guidance: Valerie Tran
description/plans: Make a 1920×1080 display advertising a (new?) GRG course on extreme weather events. Use client-provided photos and a previously-used aesthetic and basic layout.
To be completed: ~ Sept 30 2021

Here’s the draft we sent to the client:

Housekeeping: Shapes Training

September 23, 2021 By Adrian McKee

Housekeeping: Shapes Training

This week, I completed the Shape and Pattern training, which was very informative. Also: my first foray into Illustrator! I’m not that experience with vector editors…
Similar to the History of Design training, I liked the step-by-step nature of it. Besides some minor confusion on the third assignment, all of it was very clear.

The first section I actually did in Photoshop, so you can see the raster elements especially on that circle shape. I hope I can use the Keith Haring triangle for something one day! I was supposed to design shapes for 3 different moods: relaxed, serious, and energetic.

The second section was in Illustrator proper, learning the layout and demonstrating various shape/pattern tools.

The third involved structuring a visual hierarchy around some text. The instructions were slightly vague, but I believe I was not supposed to move the text around.

In sum: not as scary as I thought, for my first time in raster editing!

EDIT:

After finishing, I got some more feedback from Maddy on better ways to design a visual hierarchy; I’m adding some of our back-and-forths.
