MORE SCANNING

Dr. Doolittle came in yesterday with more documents for us to scan for him. I am assigned to this project alone right now. the scans take awhile to do because of the slow scanner we have but the quality of the images are coming out well. I don’t want to put his images I have scanned on here without permission so here is a picture of the stack I am to tackle these next upcoming shifts.

STA Poster Spring 2020

February 7, 2020 By Maddy Kaniewski

STA Roster Poster

Thuy and I are making the STA poster for the semester. The brief is to fit the theme of “champions” and include ~35 headshots and names of each STA. The first thing I thought of for “champions” was designs of vintage Olympic graphics. Thuy was inspired by retro movie poster/ad designs, so because they both draw from a similar time era our ideas have been easy to mesh.

Right now I’m illustrating pictures to represent each team (audio, graphics, video, project management) inspired by graphics from the Helsinki Olympics. I’m taking the illustrative feeling and colors from the poster, while adding some more ~retro~ style hashmarks and shading. I’m not a big digital illustrator but it’s fun using the tablet! Thuy is working on the typography and we’ll do formatting together.

German FrameNet finishing touches

February 7, 2020 By Jalisa Broussard

I’ve added the last few touches to the German FrameNet site. The site now has a collapsible menu that displays the list items horizontally. The menu items wrap as the page width shrinks. I’ve also hidden the menu background to allow the body to start from the far left of the page which gives more space for the content to display. I applied these changes to each page within the site. Creating the responsive menu was particularly challenging because the original menu is actually one image. In order to create a horizontal menu, I made the menu items into singular components. Then, I wrapped the items into one div that highlights each link when they’re hovered over. Overall, this site gave me a lot of practice with working my way around problems that arise when faced with older web design practices.

Scanning

February 4, 2020 By Abriella Corker

*.-:”**. Scanning Slides *.-:”**.

I have been working on scanning slides for a history professor. The images were pretty unconventional for something we usually scan here at the office but they seem like an interesting material to study from. The project didn’t take as long as we had estimated which is always a plus. Here are thumbnails of a few of the slides. There were 116 of them in total.

Art Things

ART THINGS

GIF

Things have been a little stressful with managing school, work, and personal projects. I always complain but never show what it actually is I got going on. These are some of the more delightful things that required lots of effort but brought me joy. I am taking intermediate serigraphy and we are putting together an 8 layer print of 15 editions. Each layer based off of ambiguous terms that were related to this reading we did on the poor image (https://www.e-flux.com/journal/10/61362/in-defense-of-the-poor-image/). I am starting on the last 4 layers this week. The image below were studies from a book on art in Mexico. This was a personal mini art exploration to give to someone and not for class. Although I did make it in one of my classes :0 oops! The last two images are what I am working on in my letter press class. We are working with metal typeface and I am so excited I am really loving the process and everything I have learned so far in the readings. There is so much to printed text and digital text that I never realized. So many hacks and rules about how to make things come together. I am hoping what I learn here can make me a better designer in the office when it comes to putting together designs with texts for our clients.
