V Lab Update
I finally started on Vlab after all the other projects I’ve been working on. Time goes by so fast when I’m working on it because I don’t really think about what I’m doing….
Who We Are
LAITS: IT and Facilities Director, Joe TenBarge initiated the Student Technology Assistant program in 2004. STAs are UT students who work on a variety of projects in collaboration with UT faculty and LAITS staff members. STAs assist College of Liberal Arts faculty members and administrative staff with print and web design. From building presentations, to creating audio/visual works, and producing online classes in the LAITS film studios, STAs are instrumental in helping COLA faculty realize their vision for multimedia projects that enhance their teaching and the students learning experience. By the end of their student careers, STAs have portfolios which demonstrate their accrued technical and design skills.
Creative and technically inclined students are appointed as STAs for one year, with the possibility of being rehired as long as they study at the university. Applicants for the program are hired before both long semesters. Interested students may look for postings on Hire-A-Longhorn when positions are available. Positions will have Student Technology Assistant (illustrator or web designer) in the title of the job post.

project: Racial Geography Tour CSS/JavaScript
Client /Prof:
completion status: Assigned on Oct 17 (Wed); working on CSS for tour stop sidebar
staff guidance: Stacy Vlasits
STA team members: Stacy, Me
description/plans: Use CSS to make WordPress Site look like the mockup (designed by Jac I believe?)
To be completed: N/A
I got moved from the 15 Minute History project to this one! Personally, I am liking CSS a lot beter (it’s wayy more intuitive than php). My task is to help Stacy make the raw WordPress site look like the mockup (shown below). He gave a pretty quick crash course over CSS syntax, and I’ve been learning it as I go ever since.
Raw Homepage:
What the Tour stops look like as of now:
What they used to look like:
My end goal:
Made a toothbrush holder for Tate! It’s going to be mounted on the bathroom walls. It was pretty simple and quick to make:
So my logo got chosen for the NWAV 49 Conference! We submitted our designs this summer, and now I have to make several deliverables (like a FB propic, twitter banner, t-shirt, mug, etc.) which is pretty exciting.
Website Icon:
Twitter Propic:
Web Banner:
My logo for Psych CE also got picked! I’m going to be working on finalizing it for the official website using UT brand guidelines and making slide title cards for the course. Apparently, the professor really liked my design which is pretty cool!
The leaf logo she picked: (will change font)
Jac’s UI mockup:
VLabs is almost done!!! We have about 2-3 more labs to do, and then we can start working on interactives. (Which Nick will be helping out on when he gets back.) Good work everyone!

Hello!! Here are some updates!
This is the progress of a COLA ID I edited:

Progresso!
I think I made the 200×300 image a little too harsh in terms of lighting. I might tone that down a bit. I’ve also noticed that a lot of the photo IDs I’ve worked on have usually pulled very warm tones. They’re often very yellow and I usually have to go in and change the color balance to make the image cooler.
I also fixed up the illustration for Tate! Here are the shampoo/conditioner bottles I drew!

Wew. Look at them just chilling.
This is how they looked before:

Meh.
Here’s the whole process of them changing in the duration that I’ve worked with them.

Progressssssoooo
I adjusted the bottles so that they’re more upright (left-most image), I added a shadow using the line art black (#1e1d1c) and put the opacity to 30%, and finally brought the opacity from 30% to 15% for a less harsh shadow.
Non-work related, but I designed a T-shirt for an organization I have been with for a long time! Here they are!

There are 4 designs!
And here’s what my co-chairs ended up liking:

Final draft??? :0
And that’s all I have for 2day!!!!

The last couple of days I have been spending some time working on animating running water, something I’ve never done before. I started by compiling all reference videos/images I could, and then animated some broadstroaks, shown with a screenshot here:
Then, using a video tutorial, I animated water motion in After Effects, a surprisingly easy process. First, I created this sequence:
Then, I added some wave warps to it:
Then I added it to my shower animation, creating a mask to make it appear as though its coming from the faucet. I also modified the faucet spraying a bit:
And lastly I began experimenting with some particle effects to add a splashback to the water hitting the body of the character. This effect was pretty nutz to work with in After Effects, with sooooo many settings to modify and make adjustments to:
And this is what it looks like with all of that pieced together:
And here’s some more progress on the particle splashback, as well as a test with dark blue tile:

Woo HOOOO! It’s a ~spooky~ UPDATE!

I’m still working on the Russian Illustration and having some trouble with scaling things to the right perspective, so most of my time has been geared towards perfecting this darn scale for the market. I might have to come in on the weekend to get this done before November arrives. Kathy says it looks good so far, and that’s been very encouraging! Today I added more buckets (that will later hold mushrooms) and I added that pesky scale. I think my line art needs to be clean up even further because some of the intersecting lines are MESSY.

Look at these cuties!
Tate also has assigned me a new animating assignment. For this assignment, I was tasked to make some clutter for a bathroom scene. I added some shampoo bottles to the corner of the tub. I labeled each layer I worked on by stating the object that was on it, the hex code of the color being used, the brush type, and the brush size.

Look at those little itty bitty bottles! That conditioner will still run out faster than the shampoo tho.
That’s all the updates I have for today!
