STAs: Student Technology Assistants

Who We Are
LAITS: IT and Facilities Director, Joe TenBarge initiated the Student Technology Assistant program in 2004. STAs are UT students who work on a variety of projects in collaboration with UT faculty and LAITS staff members. STAs assist College of Liberal Arts faculty members and administrative staff with print and web design. From building presentations, to creating audio/visual works, and producing online classes in the LAITS film studios, STAs are instrumental in helping COLA faculty realize their vision for multimedia projects that enhance their teaching and the students learning experience. By the end of their student careers, STAs have portfolios which demonstrate their accrued technical and design skills.

Prospective STAs:

Creative and technically inclined students are appointed as STAs for one year, with the possibility of being rehired as long as they study at the university. Applicants for the program are hired before both long semesters. Interested students may look for postings on Hire-A-Longhorn when positions are available. Positions will have Student Technology Assistant (illustrator or web designer) in the title of the job post.

Refactoring routes names

April 17, 2019 By Clarissa Miranda

Today, I followed the guidelines of the vue.js framework by rendering the routes with paths from named routes instead of string, I unified the alphabetic bar independently of the element rendered, and reuse the specific card elements according to the information required to be displayed.

Cascade Projects

Future Cascade Projects

There’s like a month-ish until this semester ends & so Suloni & I met to discuss what I’ll be up to. I’m going to be busy with a lot of Cascade projects this next month, mostly because I’ve been learning more about and working exclusively on Cascade this semester.

First Up: Creating a new page for the “Paid Graphic Design Services” site. Chloe had been working on this, but I’m going to be compiling information from all the different STA projects and LAITS Websites.

Second Up: Reformatting the STA website.

Third Up: Reformatting the COLA Help Guides (perhaps? maybe so??)

Stay tuned for all the fun things!!

Update on all the things and stuff!

STA Presentation–UT Instapoll

Last Friday I presented on UT Instapoll–specifically my contribution of making the product credible through:

  • UT branding–i.e. the orange bar
  • Logo design
  • Refining and cleaning up the visual design so that our instructors and students like using the tool! (and keep using the tool)

The STA presentation and the presenters did a great job of showcasing the incredible work of the students here at L-A-I-T-S. It was wonderful to be able to see all the amazing projects the other STAs work on, since the design team doesn’t interact with the Video and Audio too much. Miss Lydia Fortuna said it best when she said, “We are so talented, you guys!”

My presentation can be downloaded here: jaclyn_alford_UT Instapoll_redo or viewed below:

IC² Institute Website Redesign

project:IC² Institute Website Redesign
Client /Prof: IC² Institute
completion status: Started April 1, 2019
staff guidance: Stacy
STA team members: n/a
description/plans: create page mockups for the IC² Institute using Adobe Xd, as they are trying to narrow down their image and focus.
To be completed:

“IC² Institute is UT Austin’s think tank for exploring innovation and entrepreneurship.”

The aims for the redesign is to simplify the navigation and generally clean up/declutter the pages.

Here is the original look:

Local server data

April 15, 2019 By Clarissa Miranda

Today I continue refactoring the code to loose complexity and dependence.

Also I set the page in a local server, so now it is easier to track the changes.

Learning Persian

I’ve made significant progress on the Learning Persian site (video below). During these past weeks, I’ve added dropdowns and logos and other details. I even learned how to use Terminal to upload images into the server!

Here’s Jac & Kathy’s XD:

And here’s the progress I’ve made so far (link below):

Vlabs

I also worked on more Vlab assets:

STA Presentation

I also went to and presented at my first ever STA presentation! All the presentations were super cool, and it was awesome to get to learn about what the video and audio STAs have done. I presented on the topic of Set Designs. Suloni helped a lot with streamlining my keynotes slides, and I loved getting to showcase a little bit of what Design and Coding STAs do. Hopefully, I get to present again next year! Thanks LAITS for this great experience <3
