Creating KB Banner

KB Banner Edits for Canvasser Game

Bridget has been writing up instructions for how to create a game on canvasser that will be used as part of the CLIO training. She asked if I could help come up with some banners so these are what I made. I ended up going with the second option as a GIF since the text was easier to read on that one. Suloni came back with feedback that this wont really be a retro looking game and too make the banner more abstract.

Designing a KB Training!

August 25, 2020 By Poonum Mehta

The next two weeks I’ll be working on setting up a part II training for inDesign to later be added on the KB. I’m excited! Currently going through my old yearbook and some other inDesign tutorials online to see what else should be added. I think the main things are to sort of explain font pairing, degrees of separation, and photo crediting in print formats. Megan will probably have some more input on this so I look forward to hearing from her. In the mean time enjoy the only picture of myself in my high school yearbook, of which I was editor-in-chief.

Last Week

August 24, 2020 By Poonum Mehta

Last week was a bit hectic, I worked a bit on developing an animated stinger that eventually the professor decided he no longer needed. I also worked on edX a bit to upload links for a course’s online modules. It was cool to use edX for the first time but also a pretty quick assignment; I’m hoping I get to spend some more time on there to really see how things work. No fun images to report sadly!

Basic Training: Cascade Site Pt. 1

Basic Training: Cascade Site Pt. 1

I was tasked to get familiar with Cascade by making my own test site. This is what it looks like so far. It’s only the first part of what I will accomplished there. https://liberalarts.utexas.edu/sta-12/

VLabs Navigation Redux!

August 24, 2020 By Jake Engelberg

So I was requested to take a look at the VLabs site, mainly the navigation space. What we’ve noticed is that as content is added, things just don’t effortlessly handle themselves; overlapping section names and a navigation bar that takes up way too much space are the main culprits. Additionally, though, there are a variety of styling oddities or misaligned/unevenly spaced elements that were to be fixed as well. Here was the before:

And here is the after:

Centering/aligning things in HTML/CSS is actually a fair amount more involved than it looks. The nesting of elements is extremely important, and there a variety of ways to achieve the same result due to compatibility requirements that makes juggling the differences in styling also difficult. Another challenge in this project specifically was having to do this with Grav templates. As a CMS, Grav allows the creation of templates which multiple HTML pages will follow, as it dynamically pulls the content and then styles all pages the same. Syntax differs from regular HTML, and so I had to edit these templates to re-nest some elements such as the section title and the site logo together so that I could cleanly align them together below the labs. In the end, I learned a fair amount on editing these templates and gained more experience on elegant solutions to styling problems.

Birds, Logos and The Midnight Gospel

August 24, 2020 By Danielle Daynos

Last week I worked on a couple of Basic Training including working on the Cascade Site, AI Shape Manipulation, InDesign Spread, and AI Logo.

For the AI Logo, I wanted to use the first initials of my first and last name, as well as my middle name. The shape I came up with was a tulip!

Next is my InDesign spread where we used images from the TV Show, “The Midnight Gospel”. I’ve never worked in this program before so this was really fun for me. There are still some changes I need to make so I’ll make sure to post about this again at the end of the week.

For the Cascade Site Training, I had to make an Accordion. I decided to make it about my favorite Filipino dessert/bread: Ensaimada. I also went the extra mile and added a video teaching you how to make them yourself :-).

The last thing I did was the AI Shape Manipulation Training. Finished the edits I got from Thuy so I’m just waiting for feedback!
