v.2

Sepia, grid lines

Sepia, blurred transition

☆ B&W and color, grid lines ☆

Fall Postcard

Initial Drafts

⋆。°✩ Played around with the messaging, “my summer” vs “your summer”

⋆。°✩ Explored different imagery (graduation, on campus, talking with friends)

Exploring Layouts & Taglines

⋆。°✩ Collage allows for greater expression of summer (internships, staying on campus, traveling, etc.)

⋆。°✩ The vertical column layout was a lot more balanced and easier to read

⋆。°✩ Felt the original tagline didn’t align with our message and research. Needed to focus on the fact that students want to use summer to get ahead and complete course requirements

Final Tagline

⋆。°✩ After settling on a tagline, we’re now focussing on which text should be the main tagline, our organization or message?

Summer 2025

Summer 2025!

This summer I traveled, hung out with friends, went to my first convention, and drew as much as possible!

Travel

In July, my brother, mom, and I flew to Arizona to visit family, including a new baby cousin! While here we went on a roadtrip around parts of Utah and Nevada. I burnt to a crisp in the sun, but the views were worth it.

Art

When I wasn’t traveling, I was left with a lot of free time, so I decided to draw everyday — a goal I’ve had for a while. I worked on some fundamental skills like form and perspective and am happy to say I am noticing some pretty significant improvements! I’m also studying figure drawing with Tom Fox’s book Anatomy for Artists: Drawing Form and Pose. Thinking about the body as fundamental 3D forms feels like I’ve unlocked a new part of my brain.

In addition to sketching for fun, I also did some more art commissions. In total, I did 15 overlay illustrations and 2 sticker sheets for a special edition set of the Lockwood & Co book series! It was a lot, but they were very fun to do and they pushed my illustration skills to the limit.

SUMMER 2025

— Hecho En Texas —

This was the first project I worked on during the summer. I was tasked to create assets for a pressbook. It was a new type of project to me, but I found it similar to course graphics. (Still in progress during this time)

I was excited to be assigned another poster! The theme for my particular poster is Pop Art. Exploring different iterations was so fun- especially for the Keith Haring designs.

Final Post

July 11, 2025 By Lila Mali

Not a goodbye but a see you soon!

This will be my last blog post as a design STA. However, I won’t be completely gone as I’ve taken on the full time position in the design lab at LAITS! I’m super excited to continue working here, meeting new STAs, and getting to know the rest of the staff. I would like to thank the design managers De’sha and Valerie for taking me on as an STA and taking the time to help me and understand my goals. I’ve grown significantly as a designer and animator here and I can’t wait to see what else is next. I’d also like to thank all the STAs i’ve worked with as everyone has been super kind and insanely talented. I’ve learned so much from everyone.

Now to go onto what i’ve been doing lately.

Roster Poster updates!

This has been such a fun project to work on. We’ve made a lot of updates to the poster.

Here was the first update.

The first change was just an overall addition of detail. The docks have bricks, the houses have lines and more windows, and there’s an additonal building to fill up space. We decided to adjust the layout a bit and adding a fun detail to have the title incorporated into the smoke.

With this, we realized that the portaits maybe a bit too small and so they needed a size adjustment.

This meant adjusting the buildings to be bigger.

My face for reference. This is what we’re working with so far. There will be further adjustments in the future but for now, I really like how it’s coming along

Roster Poster Progress

Roster Poster Updates

(This post was made earlier in the month but due to an error with publishing it shows up before my later progress.)

The roster posters have undergone many changes following the winter olympics and Americana art themes. Here’s some more mockups I made for those themes.

After meeting with my supervisor, De’sha, we thought of broadening the theme of Americana art to eras in American art that will span for 4 posters! We will keep Americana art as one of the posters. Here’s a layout sketch I made for it and I’m pretty excited to work further on it.

More roster poster progress

More Roster Poster Progress

After speaking with De’sha on the direction of the roster posters, we decided on the theme being American art history! I’m excite for this theme, it opens a lot of directions for creative freedom.

To start, we want to do a pass of an Americana art roster poster and see the different iterations of that. Here’s what I was able to mock up.

I’m really liking the direction of these posters and they’ve been a lot of fun to work on. I’m excited to see where they will go.
