STA Blog

Web Refresh, Documentation Galore, and IDsss

September 17, 2021 By Ingrid Alberding

Hi, blog it’s been a minute~ it’s me, your favorite photo ID goblin

These past couple weeks have been pretty busy. I’ve been working on lots of COLA Web Refresh-related tasks. Migration first and foremost, but I’ve also been assisting with the interview process for prospective Web Refresh Project STAs and helping coordination feedback processes for the project. We have our first ~weekly check-in~ meeting next Wednesday, which I hope will help answer some STA questions and make the workflow a bit neater.

Besides that? I wrote some WP Publisher-related documentation for the KB, and helped review/copy-edit Estella’s MAMP and Grav KBs.

And of course, photo IDs. So many IDs.

Miscellany: helping Marian more with the BIES site via email and helping Sarah from the Department of Government edit the Cascade as well as coordinate an ID issue with the department head.

But what’s Pirate been up to? Lots. Here’s a picture of her hard at work. In other news, my mom sent a large package of toys to “Captain Pirate McCloud” in the mail.

Week IV: CoLA Refresh

September 16, 2021 By Adrian McKee

Week IV: CoLA Refresh

This week was fairly rote, so I don’t have much new to report on. Most of it was spent on the CoLA Refresh Project, working with Ingrid and Rahul to migrate pages listed on a very big spreadsheet.

Here is one example of a particularly complex page I migrated, and I reformatted it.

This one was linked to 22 subpages which were all reformatted into accordion tabs. I could show you all 22 but there’s not much noteworthy except for a few with tables, which we are trying to find replacements for.

Photo Id Submission

September 14, 2021 By Abriella Corker

PHOTO IDS

I edited some photos IDs today. I decided to blog them because they had some meaningful edits done to them that I think are good to show and address for STAs to see.

This first image in the top right corner was very over-exposed so I selected the area with the selection tool and lowered the exposure. Then I selected the figure and brought out the brightness so that less of the face was in shadow and more visible.

The second image was a little yellow and too close to the face. The background looked a bit low contrast with the head as well. I adjusted the color balance in the mid-tones and highlights to make it more red-blue and less green-yellow. Then brought in contrast to the background and tried to crop the image as close to the guidelines with the chin sticking out a bit past the boundary.

The last image was well composed. The only issue was that it was submitted with a heavy icy blue filter over it that looked unnatural. I color balanced shadow, mid-tones, and highlights to get rid of the blue, lower the green, and bring out more red and yellow.

Machine Learning & Ethics and Fairness

September 14, 2021 By De'sha Bass-McClellan

Machine Learning & Ethics and Fairness

project: Case Studies in Machine Learning
Client /Prof: Junfeng Jiao
completion status: Started September 14th 2021
staff guidance: Maddy
STA team members: JP
description/plans: Design course icon, prepare AI files for animation, and create graphics suite.
To be completed: September 24th (icon) October 15th (complete)

Notes:

The focus of this course is technology (specifically machine learning is used to achieve goals. For the course logo, I was thinking maybe a magnifier glass zooming in on something machine learning related (honestly, we might be able to even use the machine learning logo but let me double check that one). Similarly to the ethics course, we’re quite open to anything.

project: Ethics and Fairness in AI
Client /Prof: Ken Fleischmann
completion status: Started September 14th 2021
staff guidance: Maddy
STA team members: N/A
description/plans: Design course icon, prepare file for animation, animate intro and create graphics suite.
To be completed: October 15th (complete)

Notes:

The focus of the course is to look at the ethics surrounding AI from different perspectives (including gender, race, etc.). For the course logo, Colin was thinking of something along the lines of maybe the ethics scale. But we are super open to any other ideas.

Week 3

September 14, 2021 By Rahul Palla

Project: COLA Website Refresher
Client /Prof: N/A (College of Liberal Arts)
Completion Status: Started August 25, 2021
Staff guidance: Michelle Vanhoose, Chris Rankin
STA team members: Ingrid, Adrian
description/plans: Get familiar with Pages and learn how to use it through trainings before ultimately using it for the COLA Website.
To be completed: TBD (long-term)

Hey everyone. This week I’ve mostly just been finishing up the last of my Pages trainings. I finished the 3 personal sites I made after they were deleted.

I also wrote the professional email that was sent to update my progress on my personal site and then started migrating some of the sites from the old CMS to this one. Here are a few of the sites below.

This week I started migrating actual pages and will continue to work on that.
