STAs: Student Technology Assistants

Who We Are
LAITS: IT and Facilities Director, Joe TenBarge initiated the Student Technology Assistant program in 2004. STAs are UT students who work on a variety of projects in collaboration with UT faculty and LAITS staff members. STAs assist College of Liberal Arts faculty members and administrative staff with print and web design. From building presentations, to creating audio/visual works, and producing online classes in the LAITS film studios, STAs are instrumental in helping COLA faculty realize their vision for multimedia projects that enhance their teaching and the students learning experience. By the end of their student careers, STAs have portfolios which demonstrate their accrued technical and design skills.

Prospective STAs:

Creative and technically inclined students are appointed as STAs for one year, with the possibility of being rehired as long as they study at the university. Applicants for the program are hired before both long semesters. Interested students may look for postings on Hire-A-Longhorn when positions are available. Positions will have Student Technology Assistant (illustrator or web designer) in the title of the job post.

Updates!

September 24, 2018 By Valerie Tran

During this shift, I uploaded the 130th Celebration graphic to the history department’s home page! I had my first experience with Cascade as well. I’m still unsure about hwo this works, but I’ll do the training for that shortly.

It’s the Department of History’s homepage! And that’s the banner I made!!!

I had to fix the text on the graphic a bit because it got stretched out when I saved it for web, but I think it looks much better now!

Barchas Posters

September 20, 2018 By Jaclyn Alford

Jane Austen’s Library Fundraiser Poster and Map

project: Jane Austen’s Library Fundraiser Poster and Map Design Management
Client /Prof: Dr. Barchas
completion status: Started Sep. 12 2018, completed Sep 18, 2018
staff guidance: Suloni Robertson
STA team members: Duo
description/plans: meet with  Dr. Barchas to discuss design specs, relay info and direction to Duo, review and implement final edits to designs
To be completed: September 18th 2018

Task Description:

Hey  Duo!

We need you to design 2 posters for Dr. Barchas by Friday.

Context/Overview:
Dr. Barchas is using these posters to provide info about a Chawton House fundraiser at an upcoming conference. They will be large posters (about 3’x4′) so please keep this in mind when deciding type size!

Poster 1–Fundraiser Poster

Specs
  • psd or ai file
  • dimensions: tbd
  • portrait
  • upload draft pngs here and @ Suloni and I in the message
  • save as pdf and upload final design files into Box folder: https://utexas.box.com/s/fv6w4rb8lq0hl265pekjczrjpenplrk8
must be included:
  • Heading: tbd
  • Library card (tilted at a diagonal)
    • this graphic should take up most space on the poster (use this image: https://utexas.box.com/s/nml1jrf2v0xl8ixvll5oqjhtwhwxhe9ior scan actual card, which can be found by the scanner)
  • Date (incorporate this on the library card either digitally OR using the materials Dr. Barchas provided and scanning)
  • Location
  • logo: https://utexas.box.com/s/wm3xee4bqv4bysaikpcmb170gqpwxj6a

Poster 2–Garden Map

Specs
  • indd or psd or ai file
  • dimensions: tbd
  • landscape
  • upload draft pngs here and @ Suloni and I in the message
  • save as pdf and upload final design files into Box folder: https://utexas.box.com/s/8cmb40ilprxel7aw6tsw2wdtfq5d7l3z
must be included:
  • Heading: tbd
  • description of fundraiser: tbd
  • map graphic from indd file
    • you can keep working within this file (but know we will not be using the first page of the document), make a new indd file, or use another adobe product of your pref)
    • this graphic should take up most space on the poster
  • 20 roman numeral numbered circle labels that correspond with this pdf document: https://utexas.box.com/s/zcmjktgoe1f4gv12j2q1ajxw7fsxgk52
    • you can keep the design of the labels that are already in that indd file to save time–just move them & change them to roman numerals
    • Note for label 9 on the pdf: it will need to be placed below the original “1” label, not in the trees
  • logo: https://utexas.box.com/s/wm3xee4bqv4bysaikpcmb170gqpwxj6a
  • keep the Jane Austen quotes but change placement, remove all other text that corresponds with the key

Note: I really enjoyed meeting and working with Dr. Barchas! She was so passionate about this fundraiser and the project, and it was really wonderful that she was open to my design suggestions.

Jane Austen Posters

This week I was assigned to design two poster for Dr.Barchas. The first poster is for the Garden Tral with important locations marked in roman numerals. The second poster features a library card with ‘Jane Austen’ stamped in the front. There were some misunderstandings with the library card poster so it is not the finalized version.

The library card on the poster is cropped out from a photo of the actual card.

9-20-18

September 20, 2018 By Bridget

This past week I uploaded my blog portrait (to be used in the STA blog banner for 2018-19), then I worked on COLA IDs and got training for the new eAnthro labs project. I’m a little behind because I was out sick for a day, so I’ll describe more in detail soon, but here are some pictures of what I’ve been working on:

Week of 9/17

September 20, 2018 By Melissa Lam

Week of 9/17

I made a couple of new animations this week, most of them have been edits so there wasn’t a lot of asset creation or intense animation involved. The first one I did was the cafe owner picking a mushroom in the park:

https://sta.laits.utexas.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/3b-walking-off-path-for-mushroom.mp4

For this first part, Tate had already put in the mushroom and the cafe owner bending down, so I just added the cafe owner’s side and 3/4 back walk cycles and facial expressions.

https://sta.laits.utexas.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/3b-walking-off-path-for-mushroom-p2.mp4

For the second part, I had to make the mushroom “pop” out of the ground, so I just used the “squash and stretch” technique for the mushroom where it elongates as the cafe owner pulls it out, and then bounces a bit to redistribute the mass. Now the mushroom appears more juicy and soft rather than stiff and stale.

I also edited this animation of the Glasses Boy going up the escalator. The original file had the boy facing the other direction while going down the escalator, so the edit was simple since it was just to reverse everything so that he’s moving upwards instead of downwards.

https://sta.laits.utexas.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/4.1b-climbing-rides-up-escalator-NEW.mp4

To do this, I just had to go in and reverse all the motion tweens, then change the staggered timing of the background and the lamps so that they move downwards, giving the impression that the character and the escalator are moving upwards when in fact they are not moving at all.

Then I worked on some COLA IDs. They were all taken with interesting compositions so the subject was either too zoomed in or off-center in the originals. I couldn’t fit them into the 200×300 formats for the portfolio pages so they ended up being 200×150 or 200×200.

I’ve also been working on a rotoscoping tutorial for a future STA Basic Training! Hopefully it will allow STAs to get more comfortable using Animate. Currently I’m doing it in Word but I wonder if I should do a screen recording video?

Finally got to do some illustrations for Russian again! I edited this kid playing in the sandbox.

I feel bad for him that he doesn’t have eyes.

Finalizing the History Department Graphic!

September 19, 2018 By Valerie Tran

Hooray! It’s done and on time!! So happy!!! Here she is in all her completed glory!

I’m quite pleased by how this turned out!

Just sent it off so it can be produced into a number of things! Very exciting and very fulfilling. Suloni was a HUGE help and I felt so bad for bugging her constantly, haha. But it’s done and the client is very happy with how it turned out 🙂
