STAs: Student Technology Assistants

Who We Are
LAITS: IT and Facilities Director, Joe TenBarge initiated the Student Technology Assistant program in 2004. STAs are UT students who work on a variety of projects in collaboration with UT faculty and LAITS staff members. STAs assist College of Liberal Arts faculty members and administrative staff with print and web design. From building presentations, to creating audio/visual works, and producing online classes in the LAITS film studios, STAs are instrumental in helping COLA faculty realize their vision for multimedia projects that enhance their teaching and the students learning experience. By the end of their student careers, STAs have portfolios which demonstrate their accrued technical and design skills.

Prospective STAs:

Creative and technically inclined students are appointed as STAs for one year, with the possibility of being rehired as long as they study at the university. Applicants for the program are hired before both long semesters. Interested students may look for postings on Hire-A-Longhorn when positions are available. Positions will have Student Technology Assistant (illustrator or web designer) in the title of the job post.

Tuuuuesday stufff

I worked on the logo some more yesterday and made a variant using UT brand blue.

Oooh! Logos!

Right now it looks kinda……..crunch on the edges of the humanoid figures. Gotta fix that and talk to Suloni later this week.

Right now I’m working on the Russian illustrations! I’m trying to finish it this week. I’ll get back to the logo thing later. Perhaps later tomorrow.

BREAK IS OVER :-(

November 28, 2018 By Valerie Tran

Back at school 🙁 BUT glad to be at work. ANYWAY

I notified and fixed up some stuff for the map for the RGT project.

Ooh. Wow. A map!!!

I grayscaled the map, made significant buildings on the tour darker, added the stops for the tour, and added the dashed line of the actual path.

I also did some stuff for Tate. I did the artwork for the topmost shelf of the kitchen cafe!

What are in those sacks? Potatoes? Rice? I don’t know, but I love a good mystery. We stan.

I also worked a bit on the logo for the peer review tool. Here’s what I have so far:

They remind me of restroom signs.

That’s all for 2day!

BREAK HAS STARTED but I’m still working

November 28, 2018 By Valerie Tran

I worked on the racial geography tour map and finished! I didn’t send out a notification of the completion because I wanted to run it by Suloni and also everyone was out of the office so they wouldn’t have seen it until after break.

WOW A MAP!

A lot of my time was just spent struggling with illustrator lol

WE SETTLED ON A DESIGN YAY.

Front

Back

This is what she wanted on the back so yeah!

I also was briefed and put on a project to make a graphic/logo for a peer review tool for Canvas. This is what the references look like:

Look at dem ties.

This is essentially the look they were going for, except they want the formal-looking business humanoids to represent informal-looking humanoids.

I was also assigned another project with the Racial Geography Tour and was tasked to make a dotted path for the map of the tour. I also need to grayscale the map and add numerically labeled stops.

Both of these will be a challenge because they need to be done in Illustrator, but I look forward to getting it done!

VLABS & other stuff

November 28, 2018 By Chloe Kim

The past week, I have been mainly working on Vlabs. I realized how tedious it is and how there is actually a lot more work that goes into it than I thought it would. Shoutout to all the other STA’s who have done more than one!!!! I could not work on it until I finished up with the AIH project and then RUS412 to catch up on, once the AIH content stuff was over with. Now I have the chance to work on the eAnthro project!

Other than that, I just made a final adjustment to the “sneeze” illustration. I fixed the nose, made her face a little wider, and made her ear bigger. I am looking forward to working on my next RUS illustration, which is going to be of a TV tower in Moscow.

T-shirt stufff

November 28, 2018 By Valerie Tran

Today I was tasked with designing a T-Shirt for Dr. Brachas’ UGS class.  She wanted to reference the “I love you so much” mural for her Jane Austen course so I did my best to mimic the font and the paint texture.

Here’s the front.

Dr. Barchas is also on a budget, so I’m trying to keep the colors to a minimum. She really liked the design of the front. I also made a text box below it saying “Austen in Austin”, but she wasn’t fond of it. We’ll be meeting with each other tomorrow to discuss the next few steps.
