STAs: Student Technology Assistants

Who We Are
LAITS: IT and Facilities Director, Joe TenBarge initiated the Student Technology Assistant program in 2004. STAs are UT students who work on a variety of projects in collaboration with UT faculty and LAITS staff members. STAs assist College of Liberal Arts faculty members and administrative staff with print and web design. From building presentations, to creating audio/visual works, and producing online classes in the LAITS film studios, STAs are instrumental in helping COLA faculty realize their vision for multimedia projects that enhance their teaching and the students learning experience. By the end of their student careers, STAs have portfolios which demonstrate their accrued technical and design skills.

Prospective STAs:

Creative and technically inclined students are appointed as STAs for one year, with the possibility of being rehired as long as they study at the university. Applicants for the program are hired before both long semesters. Interested students may look for postings on Hire-A-Longhorn when positions are available. Positions will have Student Technology Assistant (illustrator or web designer) in the title of the job post.

Update

February 6, 2018 By Chloe Kim

Few things I worked on:

Helped Marla & Suloni with her big ppt presentation coming up! Mostly organizing things and adding animation features to the content in the slides.

Another RUS 407 illustration, this time U14_5:

As usual, I started out with my sketch to get the composition:

First draft:

Final draft – toned down the pebble-y sand from the first draft, put more volume into the trees and the mountains, made the water look more transparent and ~flowy~, and drew the appropriate clothing for each characters!

**I also worked on the photo ID re-organization assigned by Aidan, trained Esther for her new STA orientation, and worked on a powerpoint reformatting for PSY306.

RUS407 updates!

February 6, 2018 By Kathy Vong

I’ve been mainly working on finishing up RUS407 illustrations these past few months!

Here’s my process for U10_4… I reused a background, placed the puppets, and changed the lighting. I roughly painted on boots, umbrellas, and Oleg’s poncho. I then quickly added rain to the scene.

Did some polishing and adjusted the colors a bit after some suggestions from Suloni… Changed the rain from falling diagonal to falling straight down.

I didn’t really like how blue the scene was, so I got rid of the blue tint. I also played with the opacity of the rain a bit and finalized the illustration.

I also took it upon myself to color U10_5. This was a really fun scene to color! I tried to keep it accurate to the reference image and wanted to capture some of the subtle changes in color on the buildings. The buildings are pretty old, so some of the paint has been scraped off and have become discolored, so this was a fun illustration to color.

For U11_3, I had to create a Facebook page for Oleg, which was super fun! I looked up some branding materials from Facebook and downloaded an SVG file of their logo… I then took a screenshot of my Facebook profile page to use as a reference for this. I quickly mocked up this template in Illustrator to get an idea for the overall structure of the page. I will draw in a cover photo and profile picture and will add the required text provided by Heather.

Here’s what the final page looks like! I painted a flowering meadow and drew Oleg’s profile picture. (Apparently hedgehogs are allowed to consume alcohol???)

Similarly, for U11_5, I had to build an online store that sells flower and plant seeds. I was linked to a Russian site and used that as a reference. I copy and pasted as much text as necessary to give this site the context it needs. I roughly mocked this up in Illustrator as well. Looks like we’re looking at it in a browser window!

I then proceeded to draw different fruits, vegetables, and a flower. I used images from the site as a reference. I also reused my flowering meadow painting from the last illustration as a banner for the site.

Something else I worked on was the firebird for Canvas… Here is my final design for the firebird. The teal accent color is a placeholder for the official accent colors for each unit.

After finishing the firebird itself, I had to work on the box and embellishment surrounding it. This is what I came up with! Again, the gold is also a placeholder color.

I then made 7 different color variations based on the hex codes provided!

Other things I’m currently working on (hint: it’s more Russian illustrations):

Finished Kids Section of TBH interactives!!

February 6, 2018 By Nick Lavigne

Finished Kids Section of TBH interactives!!

In what is possibly the least exciting looking but most monumental post I’ve ever had, I want to announce that we finished the kids section of TBH. I’ve been reviewing every single animation that we’ve done which is why I don’t have much to talk about or even post images of. I think what I’ll do is create a graphic or movie of every single TBH animation together so people can truly appreciate the magnitude of what we’ve done. Once I finish that I will post it here and also use it in the TBH presentation I need to give at the end of the year. In the mean time here’s a beautiful photo of our spreadsheet, green = done.

Coding TBH Site

February 6, 2018 By Nick Lavigne

Coding TBH Site

Over the past few weeks I’ve been coding the new TBH site. I’m starting with the homepage which I modeled in the previous posts. Stacy advised to use CSS grids and gave me this site, which I found extremely helpful: https://gridbyexample.com/examples/ .TTo achieve the grid layout I basically followed the tutorial and implemented my own version. Currently each grid box contains an image of the thumbnail I want but that leads to scaling problems with the text and images being fuzzy so I think I’m going to redo it and make it dynamic.

Heres a code snippet of the html I’m using:

Also here’s the current working prototype:

RUS 407 Illustration–Kittens & Piano

February 6, 2018 By Jaclyn Alford

For the latest scene I worked on, I got to draw kittens! Utilizing/altering the background from another scene, I added the characters, kittens, and box.

Also, I added color and supplemental elements to an illustration Stephanie created as shown here:

Hello STA Blog~ This is my first post!

January 29, 2018 By Esther Shin

Hiya, the name’s Esther Shin!

This is my third day working here ( didn’t make a post until now) so I’m going to update you on what I did so far!

I made my banner and avatar on Photoshop and did ! It was fun to doodle around and draw myself (something I haven’t done in a while).

On my first day, I worked on designing my banner. I knew it had to be doodle-like and pink haha, so I started using the tablet and drew some things I liked. Cleaned it up, saved it as a png, then uploaded to this blog!

Then, on the second day, I started to design my avatar for both basecamp and for the blog site 🙂 ! Like most of my drawings I start doodling around until I draw something I like.

I ended up liking my drawing of me riding a skateboard (even though irl I don’t) wearing my favorite comfy outfit, consisting of a bright/weird/favorite sweater I own and some gray sweatpants haha. Here’s the final product!

wow! wish I looked like this in real life

Anyway~ I’m super excited to start working on projects and assignments since orientation is almost over, hoping I get more into animation and other things hehe!!
