Week 9

Project: Election Voting PSA Graphic
staff guidance: Maddy
description/plans:  I was asked to revisit the Election Voting PSA by creating a new illustration, or even adding a new color variant, to help catch the students’ attention, considering they have seen the same PSAs in the weeks leading up to early voting.

ArtBoard Studio

November 1, 2022 By De'sha Bass-McClellan

Artboard Studio

This week I have been testing out a new animation software that can help STAs create complex animations without using After Effects. Artboard studio can be seen as a combination of 3 applications:

  • Illustrator: creating vector shapes, pen tool, shapes, artboards, Layers
  • Figma: Open workspace
  • After Effects: Key frame Animation functionality

This is a free application that is web-based. It can be upgraded for more features.

Templates & Assets

This software also provides stock free assets that can be incorporated in your designs and countless templates that can be used.

Imports

In this application, you can also import different personal assets to the site:

  • Videos
  • Youtube videos
  • Graphics (PNGs, JPGs)
  • Images
  • Custom Fonts

Sharing

You can also share your project. This is mainly for someone to view the project or there is an option for it to be cloned.

Mockup Examples

Here are some examples of the mockups that can be created using this application. This allows a smart object that you can edit that will be changed on the main graphic.

Main Work Station

Artboard studio allows for a huge workspace where you can create different artboards and import different assets that you can organize.

Animation Test

Currently, I am working to see if it is possible to create an After Effects quality animation in this application. This is what I enjoy about the application so far:

  • Can import Youtube videos of the animations on the artboard to reduce tabs.
  • I can create my animation process screenshots and notes on the side of the work space.
  • I can organize the assets I want in the workspace and create smart object for easy edits. You can also import custom fonts for a design.

Animation Example

Here is a current animation template to showcase the type of animations that can be created.

To start animating, you have to hit the “start animation button” and you can add key frames for different parts of the objects. Such as position, scale, rotation, etc.

Downfalls:

  • Since it is a web-based application, the rendering of the videos takes awhile. It is strongly based on your internet connection.
  • The pen tool is nice, but it isn’t as smooth and concise as in illustrator.
  • There aren’t a lot of tutorial out on creating different animation styles in this application.

Week 8

PSY Labs Site: Imagination & Cognition Lab Banner Design

Client /Prof: Dr. Jacqueline D. Woolley
completion status: Started Oct 19, 2022
staff guidance: Valerie
description/plans: Create/design a new banner that will be placed on Dr. Woolley’s new website. She wants something related back to her research, yet whimsical and colorful.
To be completed: Oct 31, 2022

  • Ashley (our point of contact with the client) asked for the number 1, exclamation point, and cat to be changed to symbols of a unicorn head, light bulb, and beaker ( or another science-related symbol). These symbols, coupled with the pre-existing ones, perfectly represent the concepts that the lab researches.

CSMS Logo and Animation Process Documentation

CSMS Logo and Animation Process Documentation

For the past couple of days I have been working on creating documentation on the animation and logo process for the CSMS course. CSMS has a particular style format for all of their graphics. This document showcases the consistency and provides information on creation the animation and logo.

Planning, Search, and Reasoning Under Uncertainty Finalization

October 27, 2022 By De'sha Bass-McClellan

Planning, Search, and Reasoning Under Uncertainty Finalization

For this course, finding the right animation was an extensive process that require multiple revisions. We wanted to keep it to where it follows only one path, but slow the animation down a bit. In addition, here are the other edits I needed to add to the animation:

  • Change the template from the “with subtitle” to the “without subtitle” for the name of the course.
  • Make sure that the begin cursor animation matches up with the cursor when the text animation occurs.
  • Change/differentiate the final path’s endpoints and the other paths in the animation.

Since the logo design ended up changing, I had to also edit the course card and title card.

Week 7

project: PSY Labs Site: Imagination & Cognition Lab Banner Design
Client /Prof: Dr. Jacqueline D. Woolley
completion status: Started Oct 19, 2022
staff guidance: Valerie
description/plans: Create/design a new banner that will be placed on Dr. Woolley’s new website. She wants something related back to her research, yet whimsical and colorful.
To be completed: Oct 31, 2022

Inspiration from Woolley and her team: woolley banner inspo

Current website: https://labs.la.utexas.edu/woolley/

1st Banner draft:

  • After Valerie and I discussed the elements Dr. Woolley wanted in the header, I decided to make the research aspect of the banner more explicit. I also wanted to incorporate some of the symbols (sparkles, thought bubbles, etc.) that were repetitively shown on the inspo pdf. I was also told that Woolley wants something refreshing for the new website, so it was fine to stary away from the old design.

2nd Banner draft (submitted for feedback):

  • Updates: Currently, I am still waiting to hear feedback from our point of communication between us and the client, but hopefully we’ll receive some soon.

Project: Early Voting PSA

Start: Oct 18, 2022

Complete: Oct 19, 2022

Staff Guidance: Maddy

I was asked to revisit the Early Voting PSA now that the early voting period is coming up. The main priority was just updating the existing graphic with new additional voting info provided by Mike. This included making 3 variations of the graphic in both the blue and tan color scheme (6 graphics in total). The main struggle of this assignment was organizing the text in a way that was still visibly friendly, and not too cluttered. I tried to keep in mind the text hierarchy of the overall graphic. Color blocking and changes in font family/color ended up helping in separating text yet creating a cohesive graphic.

STA AUDIO POSTER (final)

Project: STA Audio Team Poster

Start: Sep 13, 2022

Complete: Oct 18, 2022

Staff Guidance: De’sha and Leilani

The STA Audio Poster finally came to a close last week:,) This project took so much trial and error on my part, but I was very thankful for the support I had from my fellow STAs with feedback. The only major change in this poster from last week’s update is that there was a crest change. I also got to learn more about formatting a PDF for printing by Maddy. I also had to import the individual objects into PS, because going from Illustrator to PS somehow messed up the quality which wouldn’t have looked very pretty when it printed (very pixelated).
