STA Blog

LAITS Student Technology Assistants collaborate with the College of Liberal Arts faculty and administration by re-imagining their instructional and promotional projects with a creative use of video, audio, web and graphic design. STAs learn technical skills on the job with LAITS development studio staff. They build presentations, produce audio/visual works, scan text documents & perform image correction. STAs are instrumental in helping COLA faculty realize their vision for instructional technology projects used to enhance the teaching and learning experience.

Today I learned the basics of using a chalk brush in Photoshop, and did a few little practice sketches. I’ve been playing with the brushes and really hope I can improve!

Cascade training

September 23, 2016 By Ann Yue

http://liberalarts.utexas.edu/sta-2/index.php

We were given a list of actions to accomplish as training, and mine is now complete! Cascade was pretty easy to navigate and the two parts I had trouble with were embedding an iframe and a video. The first had a specific button for embed while the other was just copying and pasting code so I guess I thought it should have been more complicated.

This was a rather rushed request so both of these drafts were simplistic. draft1 draft2

First rough mockup of the print flyer, focusing on layout. Text and some images are set in place.

Second mockup, focusing on fixing typography. More general ideas for layout, such as for the contact section.

Close to final mockup, front and back spread shown: background color is switched from white to match the general orange/brown from the ‘Terrace field’ picture. “Contact” is lowercase to match “Information Sessions”. The three tracks fill the space on their page. The globe logo has been placed. “Pick Your Track”, branch base and ‘Contact’ section all aligned.

Finished front/back brochure. Two photo strand instead of three to fill white space better, spacing is improved, text enlarged, and the Contact section is more readable.

Today I’ve been trying to figure out Cascade. Some of it is easy to do, but I’m still getting used to it and currently am trying to figure out how to make the news stories show up on the page. It’s a good thing I didn’t start out with a ‘real’ page!
