STA Blog

Finished Blanton

November 12, 2021 By Marianne Lê

This week Asmita and I finished adding the featured images to the first four pages of blog posts and formatting them. I then looked over the website to make sure it looked consistent and watched for styling issues.

The rest of the week I spent on trainings.

Accessibility Training

Inaccessible

For an inaccessible website, I looked at the LAITS KB.

The logos at the top failed the contrast check.

The images on the page don’t have alt text.

The tabbing on the page skips over some of the menu elements.

Accessible

For an accessible website, I looked at the BBC News site.

The images on the site have alt text.

When tabbing, I was given an option for Accessibility Help and was able to go through all the menu items in order.

French Textbook Icons

November 11, 2021 By Abriella Corker

French Textbook Icons

Project: French Online Textbook
Client /Prof: Pat Kyle
Completion status: Started November 3, 2021
Staff guidance: Valerie Tran and Suloni Robertson
STA team members: Abriella Corker
Description/plans: Create graphic design assets for the online french textbook on the platform Lingco.
To be completed: Jaurary (End of?)

I recently got assigned to this French textbook project after Poonum left the student design program after graduating. Currently we are working on getting icons created for the different components and activities within the online textbook. Today we had our meeting to flush out the details on what we will do for iconography. I sent over some icon style examples I found off the internet and so far Pat and Chad are liking the solid color with line work icons. From there I started doing some rough sketches of what these icon images could be. There is a lot more to do but I started with the easiest most universal images first.

hiring poster cont.

November 11, 2021 By Sheryl Long

Project: STA Hiring Poster
completion status: in progress
staff guidance/team: De’Sha, Maddy
description/plans: Drafting for STA hiring flyer copy

I finished the formal version of my draft, and I decided to stick with one general QR code instead of individual QR code for each departments because maybe we can have students go through department selection first once they scanned the QR code, whichever department they select will link them to the proper application form. Less cluster on the page that way.

Fall 2021 STA Roster Poster Update

November 10, 2021 By Cristina Villarreal Núñez

Fall 2021 STA Roster Poster Update

Project: Fall 2021 STA Roster Poster
Client: Internal/LAITS STA Program
Completion Status: Done!
Staff Guidance: Mike Heidenreich
STA Team Members: Cristina (me), & Abriella Corker
Description/Plans: Create this semester’s STA Roster Poster according to specifications.

So, last time I updated y’all on this project, I was working on the first version of it. A galaxy iteration, if you recall. However, that version was scrapped because it didn’t really represent the vibe we were going for, so we started working on a new concept: bubbles. Other ideas were thrown at the wall to see what sticked, but bubbles was the real champion here. So, without further ado, here are the drafts that took this version of the poster from nothing, to the most recent (plausibly final version)…

First off, I remade the setup of the bubbles to make it more dynamic and similar to how bubbles float.
Then, following feedback, I moved the big circle (the one designated for the title) more towards the center to avoid the feeling that further away STAs are not as related to the program as the others. I also redefined the color delineation for the different groups.
Afterwards, it was time to add some bubble texture to the mix, to test it out. I also started experimenting with backgrounds. This was idea #1…
… Aaaand this was idea #2. This one was less distracting and still on theme, so we moved on with this gradient background.
Next up, I added the rest of the bubble textures to the STA circles, and added all the images and names, accordingly. This was also my stopping point before I had to go on break…
A fellow (Abriella Corker) STA took over the project on my time away, and she changed the blue background color to a darker tone, in order to make the bubbles pop out better.

Now, we are only waiting for final feedback before the posters get printed, so I’ll keep you posted once that happens…

Edit: It happened! We’re done with this project! The final version got approved and you can now find the printed version at various locations of the LAITS offices. Hope y’all liked it 🙂
