French Course

This week I had time to also work on some French Course related tasks along with the Commencement Ceremony. I did two studio backdrop sets, Adrain completed another 2 sets this week as well. I also created a powerpoint for them using french artist only per their request and re-editied image sources for another powerpoint to be more french realted. Sheryl is working on the other presentation for this week, I’ve been helping her source material for it.

Week 3: Training Overview.

April 8, 2022 By Hoa Truong

This has been my third week working as a STA. It has been a really exciting journey for me because I have learned new things everyday.

For this week, I have been working on the Grav assignments, particularly are creating my own Grav site and practicing making my Grav page become visible to other users.

Here are the screenshots of my first Grav site including the “Home Screen” and “About

This assignment helped me learn a lot of new things such as how to add the content to the site, add the logo to the banner,…

After finishing creating my first Grav site, I started working on “Write Documentation via Admin Help Docs”.

I practiced cloning the admin-helpdocs repo to my laptop and then moved it to the grav-admin folder.

After that, I finished the assignment by creating the Help Docs page and make it visible to my sub Grav account.

Finally, when I log in to my sub account, I am able to see the Help Docs page shared by my main account.

Overall, I am very excited for what I have learned and things I will learn in the future 🙂 .

COLA 2022 Commencement

The 2022 COLA Commencement Ceremony will be held in a hybrid mode with online streaming. I was in charge of the task of producing an interface for the live-stream event under the direction of Maddy and Jacob. While nearing the end of my Figma drafts to send over I started documenting my process for the project. Below is the presentation.

Week #3: Design Trainings

April 8, 2022 By Keshav Thamalla

This week I learned about the design and visuals that are used in webpages and further marketing! I spent Thursday going over all my design basic trainings and although many of the concepts covered were very basic, it introduced me to the world of psychology used in strategies behind simple design choices, such as color schemes, typography, etc. The chart below really stood out to me because I was though it was so interesting that research like this was put behind these designs.

I also learned about branding and the importance of brand system that go behind choosing how to market a certain topic. I learned what a brand system was and how they were used to maintain an identity for companies/organizations using branding. Looking at several companies displayed and their brand identities in ways such as logos and colors, it is clear that most companies go through a lot of strategizing and research to form minute details about the look of their brand. Although I knew having an eye for good design was very difficult, it was cool to learn about the critical thinking that goes behind a brand.

This next week I plan on completed my Grav site and then, hopefully being done with my trainings. I am looking forward to working on substantial projects afterwards with the rest of the LAITS team!

Life Updates!

April 6, 2022 By Thuy H Nguyen

Life Updates!

The past semester and this semester was crazy for me! Here are the things that I’ve done (and am doing):

Took Operating System

I took Operating System (OS) with Dr. Gheith! OS is notoriously known as the most difficult core CS class at UT. I was suuuper scared going into it, but I loved the class! I had fun every bit of the way, and I made so many friends (we bond through the struggle T.T)! Dr. Gheith is arguably one of the best professors I’ve ever had throughout my years of schools. The TAs we had, Chris, Daniel, Adeet, Ethan, Palash, and Leanne, were so so helpful. I wouldn’t have been able to get through the class without them.

All of the (mostly) weekly assignments were super challenging, but we got through them all. I especially struggled on p7, virtual memory, and I remembered that Tuesday when I stayed at the lab from around 2 PM – 9 PM just to fix a few test cases. I git stashed so many times because I was frustrated with my code, but I finally got it to pass all chosen test cases!

The final project was the best group project I’ve ever had. Our group, SeaShell, built a “sophisticated shell” (as we claimed). I was on the Frontend team, alongside Rik, Himanshu, and Adhan. Nathaniel and Shreyas worked on file system writing, and Rithik and Rodrigo worked on syscalls. Our shell looks like this:

Our shell supported commands such as ls, cd, pwd, mkdir, touch, rm, etc. We also have a snake game (Rodrigo had this crazy idea and we didn’t think we would make it work, but it did!). We also have a text editor!

On presentation day, we all dressed up in beachy clothing (our SeaShell theme LOL).

I will miss this class and our group a whole lot!

I TA-ed (and am TAing) for CS 313E

One of the reasons why I’m only working at LAITS 5 hours per week last semester and this semester is because I’m being a TA this semester. I’m TAing for Dr. Mitra for CS 313E (the class that made me want to transfer!). Being a TA has been so much fun! I’m especially glad when I’m able to help students clear up conceptual misunderstandings of materials, walk through algorithms, and debug. Many students has told me that it was super helpful, so I’m really glad.

Played in two Piano Recitals

I performed in our Recital of Excellence for PIA 201. I played two short Schumann pieces, Kinderszenen No. 1: Von fremden Ländern und Menschen (Scenes from Childhood No. 1: Of Foreign Lands and People) and Album für de Jugend: Fröhlicher Landmann (Album for the Young: Happy Farmer).

I also got invited to perform in my previous teacher, Yunzhi, end-of-year student recital, where I played Chopin Nocturne Op. 9 No. 1. The recital was at Austin’s Steinway Gallery.

Took at Senior Trip with my friends to Hawaii!

I went to Hawaii with my friend group over Winter Break. The trip was a week long. We got lots of good food (super fresh fish) and beautiful sights! I finished the first part of Murakami’s Killing Commendatore while on the trip, and bought Murakami’s Hardboiled Wonderland and The End of the World at Barnes and Noble in Hawaii.

This Semester

I’m still dying a little this semester, because even without OS and Approximation Algorithms, I’m still taking 3 CS classes (Data Mining, NLP, and Graphics) T.T. But I’m having a lot of fun! I’m super excited to keep working on the classes, and sad to graduate soon. But I’ll come back with more updates before I graduate :).
