STAs: Student Technology Assistants

Who We Are
LAITS: IT and Facilities Director, Joe TenBarge initiated the Student Technology Assistant program in 2004. STAs are UT students who work on a variety of projects in collaboration with UT faculty and LAITS staff members. STAs assist College of Liberal Arts faculty members and administrative staff with print and web design. From building presentations, to creating audio/visual works, and producing online classes in the LAITS film studios, STAs are instrumental in helping COLA faculty realize their vision for multimedia projects that enhance their teaching and the students learning experience. By the end of their student careers, STAs have portfolios which demonstrate their accrued technical and design skills.

Prospective STAs:

Creative and technically inclined students are appointed as STAs for one year, with the possibility of being rehired as long as they study at the university. Applicants for the program are hired before both long semesters. Interested students may look for postings on Hire-A-Longhorn when positions are available. Positions will have Student Technology Assistant (illustrator or web designer) in the title of the job post.

UT Canvas App Store UI Design

project: UT Canvas App Store UI Design
Client /Prof: LAITS
completion status: Started July 27th, 2018
staff guidance: Suloni, Marla, Chad, Andre, Chris
STA team members: na
description/plans: Create page mockups for a new App Store for Canvas apps developed by UT
To be completed: October 2018

Current App Store Design:

Initial Home Page Options:

Home Page–Version 2

Here is the next version that better emulates the LAITS site (orange top bar, white site branding bar, content area, and background are the same). I included a screengrab of laits.utexas.edu for comparison.

The “Provided by LAITS” signature has been added to the footer, and I matched the style of the Canvas App Store word mark to UT’s logo configuration (sans shield imagery).

More RUS412

August 14, 2018 By Chloe Kim

My main focus these past few weeks have been on RUS412 – both animation watercolor backgrounds & illustrations. I finished another watercolor background for the City vs. Forrest theme, and I am finishing up another illustration for U1_9.

<Watercolor background>

<U1_9>

scene description: Oleg is standing on a footstool, shaking hands with Grigorij (they’re meeting for the first time); The scene is a party … all characters mingling in one of the rooms of the house; if different ppl can be doing different things, it will be good for teaching… someone texting, someone drinking a beer, someone laughing

This illustration has been fun. I’ve combined certain assets from previous illustrations and added few of my own ideas to best interact all the RUS characters in one space!! Because all 13 characters are in one illustration, however, there are thousands of layers to work with!!! It lags the system… But all is gud (: Finishing on the character positions as well as drawing in the foot stool for Oleg and also going to make uncle Ivan hold a present to put down by the tree!

The final product!!

I finished making another watercolor assignment! This time it was a folk art piece that will be going on the kitchen wall. Here’s how it turned out:

I also worked on more set design for psy333D;

After the screen testing, the desk monitor ended up being too blue, so I changed the redness of the image –>

After these edits, the purple matches a lot better. However, it is still too bright/intense so I need to work on making it more “grayed”:

I also have screenshots of the canvas dash:

8-14-18

August 14, 2018 By Bridget

I made some progress on some more Russian assignments–I drew this watercolor-style painting in Photoshop, which Tate is using in a cafe scene, and I finished the other angles for another waitress character.

Then I worked on a logo design for the NWAV 49 conference, with some color variations:

Theater Set Design & Assets

August 13, 2018 By Duo

Animation Assets

This week I mainly focused on the Theater Set design and this is the only asset I did for animation. It was harder than I thought to come up with these different designs for shopping bags, thank GOD there are a few solid colored ones. I would’ve gone crazy with the colors, but there’s a set of colors that I need choose from. My favorite is the pink on with hearts of course, but I also really like the green one with pink stripes because I think it has a nice summer vibe, like a watermelon hehehe…

Theater Set Design

I was mainly preparing my files for animation this week, making sure all the layers that I want to be animated are separated and such. I am also in the process of making some changes in the art, such as making the masks more stylized and less illustrative, making the frames look less stretched, and more centered, wider stage light. I also made a blimp for the animation because the one Tate had was very realistic, and I want to make it more cohesive with my other vector arts.

More Set Design for PSY333D

August 9, 2018 By Estella Sun

Suloni suggested I make a Digital Monitor version that included silhouettes of children instead to make the overall image less busy.

I also made an additional vertical monitor that will go behind the TA. This is the solid version:
