Autism Infographic Research

Autism Infographic Research

Start: Sep 13th, 2023

To be Completed: Sep 22th, 2023

Client: Brumback

Staff Guidance: De’sha

Description: The client is requesting an infographic about her Autism research. It should be fit for both horizontal (on PowerPoint) and Vertical (hand infographic sheet) with a branding guide for following visual assets. Since there are lot of text information included, I need to find a way to well balance the layout.

Layout Exploration:

De’sha and I chose No.2 as we thought this design followed the readers’ direction and must be the clearest layout to highlight experiment result.

First Draft:

The first draft strictly follows the timeline layout in NO.2.

Second Draft:

As we noticed the existence of the timeline and its needed interval between made the space crowded, we decided to use a two-column design instead. The general finding is listed above the contrast between mice and worms. So the reader can follow the flow from top to bottom without changing their focal point in the middle.

Version 1 final Draft:

In this final version, I cleaned up the middle part by creating contrast between mice and worm. I also created headline and small icon to help people understand these two option more easily. I also pay attention to color contrast and ensure every text box is readable.

Illustration for Version 2:

After meeting with our client, we realized that there is too little illustration “as an infographic”. So we decided to move on some fun illustrations involved in the autism diagnostic procedure. To get closer with her children patient, our client want the style to be playful and attractive. Therefore, the color palette should convert to blue and vibrant pink.

Final Draft for Version 2

With the clear illustration, I’m able to implement them into the infographic with the new layout that flavor  the balance between text and image. I used the contrast between dark blue and white to differentiate each section of autism: what is autism, timeline and the data about worms. The new flow is more straightforward about the purpose of the infographic and call-of-action.

Infographic Training

Infographic Training

Start: Sep 8th, 2023

To be Completed: N/A

Staff Guidance: De’sha

Description: In this project, I work on an infographic that helps people understand APPLE – history, gene, current status…

Here is my first draft of apple infographic with available information via the article Apples of Eden: Saving the Wild Ancestor of Modern Apples.

I primarily using graphics (Column Graph and Pie Graph) to showcase any number associated information and name tag to label the location of ancestors. I also used the cut apple slice to represent different types of apple

I realize that the color scheme of looks a little bit dirty and the illustration style didn’t match with the rest of graphic elements. Meanwhile, the composition tends to lead me into the right side because of the heavy blocks. In the second version, I revised the layout by re-arranging them and drew the color with a more clean and fresh color palette. I discovered the spray and symbol features in illustrator. The spray features makes the spots on apples scatter more randomly, adding texture to the illustration.

Carrie is BACK!

August 30, 2023 By Carrie Wang

I’m BACK!!

Hi LAITS and STA, long time no see :). I just arrived in Austin yesterday and today I came to LAITS studio to start my first day as design STA in the semester! It’s a 28 hours flight from Shanghai China to Austin but I survived eventually! There are lots of things happened this summer. In short, I got one internship but I quit soon and started my second internship very quickly.

Let me tell the story. As I’ve been designing for several years, I’d like to try something different. I applied for AI product intern at Tencent and got in luckily. I spent one month over there and realized…maybe I should still be a designer. After that, I became a creative design intern in Alibaba, working for a department called Taobao Grocery. That’s really a great 2-month experience for me and I learned a lot as a creative designer (instead of graphic designer). At Alibaba, I designed an internal exhibition for the company to know how the warehouse of Taobao with new technology; meanwhile, I updated the logo and brand guideline for a retail store, which has been expanded more than 7000 shops among China . The group in Alibaba, especially my mentor and PM, is so nice to me and taught me how to grow and how to succeed. If I get a chance, I’d like to show you more pictures and stories about my life at Alibaba.

I also travelled to Los Angelas and several cities in China for fun during the summer. Now, I’m back to school and begin my senior year as B.F.A Design Major. I’m excited about my capstone project and I’ll definitely invited y’all to my exhibition at the end of school year. I also took two RTF class to fulfill my RTF minor. I hope I can learn more about editing and the media industry via these two courses.

All in All, I’m excited to be back as design STA and continue my LAITS journey with y’all! STA allowed to work with a team in a professional environment as well as expanding my design skills with training. I hope I can utilized my skills gained from two summer internship and helped me to manage myself better at LAITS.

See You Later

May 1, 2023 By Carrie Wang

Shoutout to my team

Hey everyone. Here is my “last” post before I flew back to my country and visit my family. But no worries, I think I’ll be back in Fall 2023 and continue my journey as a design STA. From the 2022 Fall to the 2023 Spring, it has been a great year working as Design STA and meeting all of you! Thank you, Leilani, Luisa, Lorena, Thang, Marissa, Adrian, Daniela, and De’sha, for always being on my back of me and encouraging me to be a great designer and person. You guys are so nice to me and I love working with you!!! Isaiah, I hope you can have a great summer semester with this wonderful team, and let’s see if I get the chance to work with you (since I’m working on web design a lot)!

Valeria and Maddy-I are so grateful for your’s help in the entire year. I’m so glad that you can be my STA Manager and Art Director. You guys can always give me useful feedback by seeing my design with new eyes and being open to all design possibilities, and guiding me via different approaches. You teach me not only how to succeed as a designer but also how to be a more proactive, organized, and inspired person! Thanks for hiring me as an STA and allowing me to engage in these wonderful design projects and work in the team.

Also thank you to other LAITS staff and STA from other departments, as well as all the clients, for trusting me to work on all of projects and providing effective communications in terms of it.

What I’ve Learned

I’m glad that I can be one of the design STAs in LAITS and I’ve learned so much in the past year. I was a graphic designer as a design student but I’m interested in user interface and experience design. I appreciate that Maddy, Valerie, and our clients gave me the opportunities to work on CTX Retold, the UTFC website, and the Precursors, and help me out each time I stuck. I can tell I improve a lot from the experience and get more comfortable to use Figma for websites. I hope I can do more projects related to that shortly.

I also like other design tasks I did in the LAITS studio. I’m able to see some behind-screen story and a studio can work out with each component. I’m especially thankful for the STA presentation. It was my first public speaking in front of such a large group and I did it! It’s a tough process but my design team and Mike helped me succeed in the presentation. I hope I can do it better next time (if I get the chance!)

My journey..

I’ll go back to Shanghai, China soon to visit my family and friends soon! I haven’t been back for two years and I’m getting excited about it. In China, I’ll also be a product design intern in the AI team at Tencent. It’s a Chinese Internet-based platform company and I believe that it’s getting more international these years. I’ll also spend several days in Los Angeles for vacations before I went back to Shanghai.

Thank you for this team! It’s really a greta time to work in LAITS as design STS and hope to see you guys soon! Here is my Linkedin and Portfolio Website! Feel free to walk through and connect with me. SEE YOU!
