Vlabs Interactives

Last week I got trained to make assets for the vlabs interactives, which is going to be a pretty big project lasting into the summer. We’re creating everything in Photoshop, and every popup and clickable item (word, arrow, shape, etc) needs to be saved on its own layer so that when it gets put into Canvasser each element can be isolated.

This is the background for a lab 2 section 1 interactive (each lab has its own color, and lab 2 is red):

 

 

And this is the beginning screen, which is greyed out until you click the “Begin Interactive” button (which will be added later in Canvasser):

 

 

Other than that, I’ve been doing photo IDs and updating a few of the Cascade/Web Editor how-to pages.

Computer Support for COLA Web Editor

I’m continuing to help update information about how to use the new COLA web editor, which has a very different interface from the old database. We need instructions targeted at university staff and faculty for the main UT computer support pages and instructions targeted at LAITS-only staff who have admin permissions in the web editor. The latter instructions will go into a WordPress site for STAs to use in the future that will be a guide/compendium.

Littlefield Lecture Posters

I’ve also been working on some poster designs for a lecture sponsored by the Department of History. To expedite the process Suloni gave me a .psd used for last year’s lecture to use as a template (featuring an author + book), and I just exchanged the images and changed the text and colors. I’m also going to work on some original designs today, which I will post here soon.

Russia Bookmark

This past week I’ve been helping Tate mockup a bookmark for the promotion of the online Russian learning course. This is the final design:

The borders and wood texture used in the background were designed by a former STA. We also extended the white border into the bleed area, which you can see in the second image showing the grid lines in Photoshop.

I’m also helping to redesign the profile page for a professor. I’m mocking up the content in a Google Doc, then when that is approved I’ll move it into the

Second Week Back

Over break I decided take a few classes this semester part-time, and luckily I was able to get into some good classes at the last minute, which means I’m able to continue working as an STA (this is my second week back).

I spent last week finishing up the Cascade documentation, all of which has now been moved over to the UT site:

Then I got an assignment from a client to update the logo/word mark for the Laboratory for Ethnic and Race Equity (LAESER) website. Their current logo looks like this:

The original design was low resolution and grainy, so the client wanted a new version at a higher resolution and a new font, but with everything else kept the same. I made some mockups in Illustrator yesterday using the fonts she specified and saved it as a viewable PDF, which I sent over for approval:

I traced the triangles with the pen tool and used the eyedropper to get the colors from the original. To get the triangle shapes to be more precise I drew lines over them using the line tool, then Windows > Pathfinder > Divide to slice and delete the excess area, using the original as a guide underneath.
