RUS412K Animation: Peeling Apples

Heyo! I just wanted to share some progress gifs as I worked through this animation of apple peeling. It ended up being straightforward, but there was some new stuff I did here that I haven’t done in previous animations.

RUS412 Laundry Box

October 24, 2018 By Tate Gibson

You may have seen some of the great work that Emily did helping create a bunch of angles for this laundry box, but I added the logo to it! I was going to give this to Emily to work on, but I forgot that Adobe Animate’s Distort feature is super finicky, so I had to export the logo at a super high resolution from Animate into Photoshop, distort it, then re-import into Animate. Click the box to see it spin!

RUS412 Shower Faucet Animation

October 23, 2018 By Tate Gibson

The last couple of days I have been spending some time working on animating running water, something I’ve never done before. I started by compiling all reference videos/images I could, and then animated some broadstroaks, shown with a screenshot here:

Then, using a video tutorial, I animated water motion in After Effects, a surprisingly easy process. First, I created this sequence:

https://sta.laits.utexas.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/wave-warp.mp4

Then, I added some wave warps to it:

https://sta.laits.utexas.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Water-Flow-MAIN_1.mp4

Then I added it to my shower animation, creating a mask to make it appear as though its coming from the faucet. I also modified the faucet spraying a bit:

And lastly I began experimenting with some particle effects to add a splashback to the water hitting the body of the character. This effect was pretty nutz to work with in After Effects, with sooooo many settings to modify and make adjustments to:

And this is what it looks like with all of that pieced together:

And here’s some more progress on the particle splashback, as well as a test with dark blue tile:

Exxon Donor Thank You Video Quote Pages

October 17, 2018 By Tate Gibson

I’ve also been working on some “Quote Pages” for a Thank You video to Exxon for their donations to UT programs. I’ve tried a few different things for it and have attached some of my iterations to this post.

The first iteration, I leaned heavily on Premiere plugins for this since I haven’t made anything like this for LAITS before and it helped me get some footing for where to take it:

I then tried a variation that included the color image, but Kelly preferred the gradient image. This one also accommodated portrait style photos if needed.

Following Kelly’s critique, I made some modifications to the intro transitions:

Then I tried Kelly’s suggestion of fading in the gradient at the beginning of the quote page, and I think we’ve reached a point where the formatting is essentially finalized:

Now I’m working on some color variations for the text box and title line; should have this finalized by tomorrow!

RUS412K Final Set of Animations Update

October 17, 2018 By Tate Gibson

RUS412K Final Set of Animations Update

I’ve been chugging along with the pre-production for the RUS412K animations and just wanted to share some the progress I’ve made! Here is the new Cafe Kitchen, with two different angles:

And I used the lovely apples that Estella made to create LOTS of apple variation and some giant piles of apples to go in the space:

And this is the Apt Bathroom, shown with 3 angles:

Complete with a washing machine door that opens and closes!

And a buncha angles of this toothbrush

Already we’re getting through the preproduction stuff super quickly, but I’m hoping to use any extra time we have to really add clutter to the backgrounds and make them more real and entertaining!
