Brochure and STA Crest

Value Institute Brochure

These past two weeks, the focus has mainly been on my assigned service center project, a brochure for the Value Institute at Dell Medical School. So far, I’ve imported all the copy and most of the photos, and I’m working on getting the layout straightened out. This project is a good refresher on publication design, my favorite area of design, so I’ve been enjoying setting type styles and utilizing grids and columns. Here are some spreads:

STA Crest

I’m responsible for designing the poster for the project team STAs. I’ve enjoyed learning more about what they do, and I’ve discovered that they are the ones keeping LAITS classes running for students, quite the important task. Here are a few drafts for the crest.

Greenscreen Week

UTFC Greenscreen Slides

The past two weeks have been fairly slow, so I’ve mainly been working through greenscreen slides for UTFC modules. There’s a learning curve to figuring out which images fit best, portraying both the vocabulary noun/verb and the location highlighted in that particular module. Overall, it’s been fun work combing through images of different cities and finding ones that work well.

Week 11 and 12

STA Training

This week, since I haven’t had any major assignments, I’ve been working through my trainings. I finished the Design History basic training, making a poster inspired by New Typography and Bauhaus design. It was really fun to dive into a specific style and find which components make a design a certain style.

I’ve also been working on color theory training.

I also worked on UTFC Greenscreen slides, finding royalty-free images for the word lists provided. Here are some of the slides I’ve been working on.

Minor changes made to a pre-existing map for UT French.

UTFC Graphics

Most of the work this week so far has been banners and backdrops for the French class. It’s become more of a streamlined process after doing it a few times, and every time I work on them, I pick up more skills and develop an eye so that less edits are needed. I finished two modules’ backdrops and one Lingco banner so far this week.

This week, I also began learning how to prepare the Powerpoint slides with French vocabulary.

That’s it for this week!

Week 9

August 23, 2022 By Luisa Matzner

First week of school! This week has been a lot more toned-down now that most of the course graphics are done. I’m glad we were able to finish most of them by the start of the semester. I’m particularly proud of my work on NTR 306 Fundamentals of Nutrition, and I hope it gets put to good use this semester. I also learned about new software and skills over the course of these assignments. I feel a bit more confident about animating, but there’s still so much to learn. Lastly on course graphics, I wasn’t able to see my work in the studio, but here’s a photo of what the GOV 310L monitor looked like in-person. One of my favorite parts of being a designer is seeing the work in use, so this is really exciting!

This week, I’ve been mostly working on the backlog of French class graphics that have been assigned to me. Most recently, I’ve been working on backdrops, which is pretty fun work.

That’s my week so far! I’m excited to see what the semester will bring.

Week 8

August 17, 2022 By Luisa Matzner

I began an excursion into animation this week! I was assigned to animate the stingers and intro for GOV 312L. Opening After Effects and not knowing what any of the buttons do was certainly a learning experience, but I managed to animate the custom stinger from scratch. Here it is:

The intro was even more daunting, as it had to be longer and more interesting than text appearing in five seconds. I ended up using Premiere Pro, a more familiar video software to me, to animate the intro. I’m really proud of how it turned out. Here it is:

In addition to the animations, I also finished out the course graphics for GOV 312L and worked some more on the French class. That’s it for this week!
