LRC Mockups

This week I made some more small tweaks (adding titles, filler text) to the 2 LRC mockups so they can be shown to the clients for more feedback. For the purposes of their grant proposal, all they need is a static mockup, so this is just a rough idea of what the site could look like (if it gets built).

The first image shows the dictionary tab toggled, where a user can search for specific words (in this case the words are from the Yucatec language) and then see a basic definition, the etymology, semantic categories, and related languages. The second image shows the semantic tab toggled, which lets you see all of the etyma that fall under a specific category (like dishes).

Here are potential colors I came up with, which I pulled from 1) their current site and 2) the last mockup I did for them, where I used this soft green color as an overlay on top of Mayan hieroglyphics. The UT burnt orange as an accent

MKT 320F Updates

MKT 320F Updates

I added a master template to the slides and this is how it turned out for each of them. Then I updated the wardrobe design to be more grayscale rather than neutral tones because those would be too complex for matching to skin tones in the studios.

Reflection

December 7, 2020 By Danielle Daynos

Today is my last day and I worked on and finished the Infographic training. This is how it turned out!

This blog post is going to mostly serve as a point of reflection. I’ve definitely appreciated my time at LAITS as an STA. I recognize there’s a lot for me to improve on so I really appreciate this opportunity given to me. I really enjoyed doing all of the trainings and the knowledge I was able to gain about design, CMS, and learning a little bit about HTML and CSS. I especially enjoyed what I learned in the FIGMA training and actually plan on making a website with my friend who codes. Looking forward to what this experience has opened for me and the new things in the future I hope to accomplish!

Pixel Art

Pixel Art

I finished up my pixel art training today! It was nice to take a short break from course graphics and code to make something ~artsy~. Here’s my reference image and the pixel art that I came up with!

InDesign + AfterEffects Basics

December 5, 2020 By Athena Zeng

InDesign + AfterEffects Basics

This week, I worked on two trainings- InDesign and AfterEffects. In the InDesign training, we were asked to create a four-page layout for a story about The Midnight Gospel (I really enjoyed this show). We were given the article and four pictures to incorporate, but other than that, we had a lot of freedom as to how we wanted our spreads to look. Here is the final result of the InDesign basic training. I used to do newspaper in high school, so this training made me very nostalgic :'(. I remembered some general rules from high school, but this training was cool because I learned a lot of shortcuts on InDesign that helped lend to greater design consistency. For example, I learned how to use master templates and how to create text/paragraph styles. I remember being so intimidated by InDesign in high school, but I had so much fun doing this training in this setting and would love to experiment more on InDesign. Also thank you to Megan for your help and guidance!!

I have also been working on an Aftereffects basics for simple online graphics training. I decided to make an animation for a mock course on Earth’s Dynamic Movement. So far, I have made the assets on Photoshop and made an animation on Aftereffects. I am unsure about the actual graphic, but I think the main point is to understand how Aftereffects works in time for our winter break Study/Wellness video project (which I am excited for). After converting the composition into a GIF, I realized I had misunderstood the pacing (because I was only looking at the preview in the Aftereffects program), so I will need to adjust a bit to get the pacing to be less awkward. But it has been fun! The Aftereffects program was also kind of intimidating at first, but now it has become a little more intuitive, and I want to experiment more with all the capabilities and effects. You can see it here.

I am looking forward to the end of school! Having so much to do at once is very overwhelming, and I prefer having more compartmentalized focuses. Here is a song that makes me happy. Also, I am thoroughly enjoying Naruto Shippuden. Have a great weekend!

Mockups for the LRC

This week I got a new assignment to mock up some web pages for a future site called “Mesoamerican Lexicon” for the LRC (Linguistics Research Center). I’ve previously done some other page mockups for them, so this is similar to what I did before. I’m using Adobe XD to create the mockups, and even though I’m new to the program it seems to be going pretty well. Here are some of my initial drafts, trying out some different colors:

Other than this main assignment, this week I met with Ingrid to go over the main Cascade tasks (setting up new sites, answering web support requests, etc.). I tried to compile some links and notes so it would all be in one place and easy to reference in the future (hopefully). I’m also working on a new basic training to create an infographic using a combination of Illustrator and InDesign (I’ll post some screenshots here once I make some more progress on it!)
