LAITS Student Technology Assistants collaborate with the College of Liberal Arts faculty and administration by re-imagining their instructional and promotional projects with a creative use of video, audio, web and graphic design. STAs learn technical skills on the job with LAITS development studio staff. They build presentations, produce audio/visual works, scan text documents & perform image correction. STAs are instrumental in helping COLA faculty realize their vision for instructional technology projects used to enhance the teaching and learning experience.

First Short Animation

June 15, 2017 By Jaclyn Alford

I also began working on my first short animation for the Russian course. In the scene, one character enters, fans his face, and tells the other character that it is warm. The other character then puts down their phone, gets up, and opens a window. I have been utilizing tweens as much as possible to help make the process go by faster.

This week’s progress

June 13, 2017 By Chloe Kim

For the past two days, I have started working on my first RUS406 animation project for Unit 2.8. Though a bit challenging, it’s been really fun trying to create different layers for different movements and trying to figure out the timing of everything. Lauren helped me to create new symbols that I could not have made myself: knitting eyebrows and an open mouth! Thankfully, she not only taught me how to use Animation, but also helped guide me through the project. This is a snippet of what it looks like so far:

Today, I was given an assignment for ADV315 to remake the cover slide for the class’ PowerPoint. Through communicating with the client and Suloni, I was able to modify the variations I worked on:

Here are some screenshots from the RUS animation project I’ve been working on. I drew the plane, train, and car assets, and animated more shorts to be used in the powerpoints. It’s ongoing, and there’s a lot to do still. I have also been teaching other STA’s how to use Adobe Animate so they can help out with this project as well!

LRC Trifold Draft and Cutouts

June 12, 2017 By Jaclyn Alford

I began working on a trifold handout draft for the Language Research Center that corresponds with a banner that was already designed. To coordinate the trifold with the banner for this first draft, I am using the same color scheme (blue: #203b82, grey: #dadad2, and white) as well as incorporating the same artwork.

The main challenge I have encountered with this project thus far is formatting the text. Due to the large mass of text that must be included in the handout, I am still working out how to organize the document so that the sections are easy to read. This first draft–which is shown below–is a bit cramped and text-heavy, so going forward I am going to try adding more aspects to further distinguish the different sections and reformat the “EIEOL Features” section so that it is not just a bulleted list

Additionally, I have been helping as needed with the Theatre & Dance “Theatre Makers” project. I posed as the Director, and cutout the Stage Manager during which I learned how to cutout using masks in Photoshop; as it turns out, masks are safer to use than erasing because they operate on a black/white system (where white areas show the image and black areas hide), so the image itself stays intact.

Below is the cutout I made for the Stage Manager (featuring Valerie).
