latest update

August 28, 2018 By Chloe Kim

I have been continually working on the RUS412K projects, for both the animation and the illustrations. Before I took a week off of work, I finished the RUS412K homepage banner.

My initial placement of just the RUS412 Illustration characters:

And since RUS412K animation is also a huge part of the class, we have decided to incorporate those characters into the scene:

I also started working on another watercolor background for Tate and am in the progress of finishing it up – just need to make some adjustments with the colors and fill in the birch trees!

Initial sketch – I had to make separate layers for almost every single distinct features/ items (?):

And started coloring it:

More RUS412

August 14, 2018 By Chloe Kim

My main focus these past few weeks have been on RUS412 – both animation watercolor backgrounds & illustrations. I finished another watercolor background for the City vs. Forrest theme, and I am finishing up another illustration for U1_9.

<Watercolor background>

<U1_9>

scene description: Oleg is standing on a footstool, shaking hands with Grigorij (they’re meeting for the first time); The scene is a party … all characters mingling in one of the rooms of the house; if different ppl can be doing different things, it will be good for teaching… someone texting, someone drinking a beer, someone laughing

This illustration has been fun. I’ve combined certain assets from previous illustrations and added few of my own ideas to best interact all the RUS characters in one space!! Because all 13 characters are in one illustration, however, there are thousands of layers to work with!!! It lags the system… But all is gud (: Finishing on the character positions as well as drawing in the foot stool for Oleg and also going to make uncle Ivan hold a present to put down by the tree!

The final product!!

RUS 412!!!!!!

August 6, 2018 By Chloe Kim

Last week, I mainly worked on the RUS 412 project for both the animation & the illustration. For the animation, Tate has assigned me my first watercolor background, and it was fun to experiment with the different brushes. I also struggled a lot to “free draw” the lines without holding Shift when doing “straight” outlines for the buildings for the ~natural~ feel. This is the progression for the background:

First attempt:

Final version with all the details:

I also worked on another illustration scene – U5_8:

scene description: Polina and Oleg are standing in front of Boris’ favorite office chair. It’s old and needs repairing and a new coat of paint. They’re standing in front of it as if deciding how to fix it.

<initial sketch>

<first draft>

<finished basic coloring>

<final draft> – Suloni suggested that I add some kind of an artwork in the background, so I added a map that would go well with Boris’ study area atmosphere.

I also created new assets for the RUS 412 animation project – this time, I made light switches (on/off):

update

July 31, 2018 By Chloe Kim

Last week, I worked on several different things, such as Cascade redocumentation & training for the Schusterman faculty, finishing my RUS 412 waiter character, Samantha’s farewell card, and also starting a watercolor background for RUS412 animation that Tate assigned to me.

For cascade redocumentation/ training, the assigned STA’s were paired up with a faculty member who came into the office, and I got to answer some of Dr.Lichtenstein’s questions. It was kind of scary at first because I am still not 100% confident with cascade, but overall I was able to navigate her through the website and the different steps of overcoming her issues!

I also added the waiter’s hats for the 3/4 front and 3/4 back positions:

I was able to finish Samantha’s farewell card as well – I added in the purple + green because that is the color palette that she likes (according to Suloni). I also added in a fun illustration of her and her dog in the hot air balloon to make it more ~personalized~.

Finally, I started on the watercolor background for one of the RUS412 animation scenes. I have a lot of adjustments to make, such as drawing in doors/ windows to the buildings, but I hope to get it done by the end of today!

STA meeting

July 24, 2018 By Chloe Kim

The past week, I worked on several different things. Because I didn’t have any RUS412 assignments, my focus was on other things like NWAV 49, TBH, Cascade, photo ID’s, and even a surprise project for Samantha, who is leaving us!

NWAV 49 project has been really fun, because there aren’t strict rules and I can be my creative self. One challenge is that I still am not entirely sure what NWAV is… but I just decided to go with the flow! I changed the colors from nude colors to more pop-culture/ bright colors to grab the viewer’s attention. These are the logos and banners (not sure if finished, though):

For TBH, I had to replace some of the homepage images – I either drew them or found them on the Noun Project. I also got rid of the black boxes in the “Teachers” section for the little icons. I also changed the SAA logo at the bottom, as per Ruben’s request.

I also worked on some cascade redocumentation – meeting with our client tomorrow!! I’m kind of nervous because I feel like I still don’t know cascade 100%;

For photo ID’s, I’ve been assigning them to the new STA’s, but since I didn’t really have much to do, I decided to take on all the new photo id request. Here are a few of them:

And last but not least, Samantha’s farewell card:

Latest Update

July 16, 2018 By Chloe Kim

In the past week, I continued working on my RUS 412 projects for both the animations and the illustrations.

I finally finished my waiter character for the animation:

I then worked on another illustration for U4_10 after finishing U1_10:

scene description: Oleg and Polina are looking at mannequins in a store – adult and kid sized – male and female. They can be dressed however, but they should be drawn as if they have wigs (hair) and with fake eyes, lips, etc. They should not be the faceless/colorless mannequins.

I first made a collage to show Kathy my layout:

Then I started making my line drawings:

And then started coloring in the backgrounds of where the mannequins were standing – I wanted to make the theme ~summer~ and add a tropical/ beach feel…

And then I sketched the inside of the store through the window to make it look more ~realistic~ and also added in some shadows, as well as finished coloring in everything else. I also added in some “shine” to the mannequins to make them look more plastic-y:

The light source looked a bit confusing, so I googled “store front awning in the sun” and got a better idea of how the shadow would cast over the store. I also added in Polina and Oleg looking into the store. Here is my final version of the illo!

Lastly, I started working on the NWAV 49 project and made my first logo draft:
