TXDST Web Redesign

Homepage Ideas

Project: TXDST Website Redesign
Client /Prof: TXDST
Completion Status: To be finished fall 2023 semester
Staff Guidance: Maddy
Description: Mocking up ideas for story segment on homepage in Figma

This week, I’ve been working on how to lay out individual stories/articles/blog posts on the site’s homepage. It’s important to strike a balance between giving the user a starting point and not overwhelming the homepage with information. Here are a few of my ideas mocked up:

Logo Resizing

Project: edX Online Courses
Client /Prof: Internal
Completion Status: Week of May 15
Staff Guidance: Maddy
Description: Resizing UT logo to match

After it was brought up that some of the UT logos in the intro sequences weren’t the same size, I was first assigned to resize the logo for the AI in Healthcare course. Then, I was tasked with going through all the intros and marking which had the correct sizing and which needed editing. From there, I’ve started going through the list of the resize ones and working on them bit by bit. While the actual resize is straightforward, fixing the broken links in the After Effects project takes the most amount of time. While all the links should be available to me, many files have changed names and even some layers have been deleted, so it takes an extra bit to get them fixed.

Client /Prof: TXDST
Completion Status: To be finished fall 2023 semester
Staff Guidance: Maddy
Description: Mocking up ideas in Figma

After spending some time sketching out some layout ideas for the county and stories homepage segments on paper, I decided to bring a few of the ideas into Figma to see how they would look at a higher fidelity. I focused on the usability of the cards and the option to expand further if needed.

Texas Domestic Slavery Project

Ideas for Web Redesign

Project: Texas Domestic Slavery Project
Client /Prof: External
Completion Status: Started March
Staff Guidance: Maddy
Description: Finding inspiration and ideas for visuals and user interaction
To be completed: Fall semester

I picked back up where I left off for the TXDST web redesign this week by jumping back in and finding similar small archive and museum websites. This time, I focused less on looking for ideas for visuals and more on interactive elements and specific solutions for archives, such as how to cite material without cluttering the readable text. Here are a few ideas I liked:

UTFC Image Sourcing

UTFC Greenscreen Image Sourcing

Module 3.4 Physical Attributes

Project: UTFC Greenscreens
Client /Prof: Internal
Completion Status: Started Apr 3
Staff Guidance: Maddy/Valerie
Description: Sourcing images for use in UTFC classes
To be completed: June 1

For this module, I was tasked with a different sourcing challenge: finding public domain images of French art that fit the vocabulary for the lesson. Maddy gave me a few starting points in the Met Museum and the US National Gallery collections. From there, I searched images that exemplified the vocabulary words. Many of the words involved hair color or facial features, so it was interesting to look for certain features in the paintings and sculptures (blond hair was particularly difficult to find!). I also found that certain databases had better metadata than others because I could search with vague descriptors (such as blond hair) and relevant images would appear. With the National Gallery’s database, I either had to know the name of the specific artist or a keyword in the title of the piece. Needless to say, I ended up finding most of the images in the Met Museum’s collections.

From sourcing…

To cataloging…

To the final Powerpoint!
