What I’m doing

Every Friday afternoon a collective of intellectuals, students, and sherry lovers gather to hear prominent British speakers or speakers talking about prominent British figures. The Harry Ransom Center provides an intimate setting blah blah..

Dr Richard Lewis has requested that each speaker be archived on the Dept of British Studies’ website. In order to do this we set up a portable recording console equiped with equalizers, compressors, and digital recording devices. We use wireless mikes, making it comfortable for the speakers. After recording the speech, I then take it back to the STA LAB and fiddle faddle with it…

Things I learned

Before this assignment, I had very little pro-tools experience, and even less field recording experience..

November 12th

British Speaker Series

Was held at intellectual property
We used a P.A. system this time.
There were members of the UT symphony there playing. So we set up a mic to record them as they played before and after the speakers.
We used a wireless mic instead of the wireless lapel mics because there were about 10 different speakers and Dr Lewis.
Sean showed me how to cut out unwanted space in between speakers using pro-tools.

Laying out the font.
Having some issues with photoshop because of the large file size. It keeps freezing on me when I try to transform the Knight layer.

Going to organize photoshoots for the ASL website
Photoshoots are going to illustrate different scenarios associates with throwing a football.

October 27th

Meeting with Sean on Thursday, he is going to give me a few tutorials on audio mixing.

Persian Online

Went through contact sheet and found all the photos on gettyimages.com
Was told that the images from gettyimages would not work.
Met with Emily and discussed project.
Now looking for photos on freedigitalphotos.com and Stock xchng.
Documenting the date and link for each photo I find.

October 22nd

Persian Online

Looking for new images on the web.
Finding quality images has proven to be harder than I anticipated.
Need to meet with Suloni and discuss organization methods.

British Speaker Series

Sean was in Portland, so I set up by myself.
Tough because speaker had the “mumbling” British accent.
Interesting talk about Allen Lane, who was the founder and publisher of Penguin Books.
Mike wants me to help him and sean in the studio. He was going to discuss it with you (Gary) in further detail.

Suloni taught me how to edit pen tool path with the pencil tool.
Marrissa taught me how to use the “Direct Selection” tool to manipulate and and adjust the curves of a path.

Learned that when you open the door to the memory card bay, the card prepares to be ejected and stops recording. Thankfully, we always record with a backup card that goes through the “line out” on the mixer. So it’s all good!
