SummerHacks Project: GoalBuddies

August 17, 2020 By Thuy H Nguyen

SummerHacks Project: GoalBuddies

Throughout the summer, I’ve been working on a hackathon project with my friends Jennifer, Jeff, Matt, and Bryan. The idea for our app is a mobile platform where individuals can keep track of goals but at the same time make groups with their friends and track common goals among each other. We wanted the app to encourage a supportive environment among friends, especially as we know how COVID-19 has really impacted our motivations to work!

Here’re some screenshots of our app, compiled as the cover for our submission.

Although we didn’t win the hackathon (the wining teams have very cool projects ideas!) I’m very grateful to have had this opportunity to work together with my friends as well as learning a completely new technology (React Native) from scratch to build this app. It has been a process (12 weeks O.O) but I’m really happy that just simply committing to finishing 1 or 2 small things per day makes a different!

Here’s the YouTube demo video of our app. I’ve marked the time stamp where we started walking through the user flow.

And if you’d like to read more about our tech stack / challenges, please checkout our submission page on Devpost: https://devpost.com/software/goalbuddies?ref_content=user-portfolio&ref_feature=in_progress

Weekly Classical Music Recommendation

Weekly Classical Music Recommendation

This week I present Schumann’s favourite composition, claimed by the composer himself, Kreisleriana. The work aims to portray the musical version of E. T. A. Hoffmann’s fictious, eccentric, wild, and witty conductor Kapellmeister Kreisler. The contrapunctal characters presented in the piece supposedly represent Schumann’s “Florestan” and “Eusebius,” the two contrasting characters Schumann used to describe himself (which is interesting to note, considering the composer might have had schizophrenia). Anyways, here is the piece.

KB Cascade Part 2 Addition – Accordion

I also added the accordion instructions to the KB as a sub-part of the Part 2 Training as well. For this, I tried to go more in depth with the code explanation.

This section is at the bottom of this post here. You can also view my demo site here.

Updating COLA Help Guide – Accordion

After helping a client with the accordion, Suloni wanted me to add these instructions to the COLA Help Guide. She also provided some feedback on putting an interactive accordion example on top of the instructions as well. Here it is.

You can also view the instructions live here.

CLIO Training

August 12, 2020 By Poonum Mehta

Today I completed the first part of the CLIO training. I learned how to add and edit modules on canvas, which included learning how to add multiple choice/short answer questions, change color bar formatting using CSS, and adding external links and media to cards. This training was super fun and even though I’m still copy/paste/editing code, I feel like I’m learning at least some basic aspects of CSS formatting. My topic was fruit classification, here’s what I’ve got so far!
