LaL Updates

November 20, 2019 By Kevin Dao

Hello,

In the last week, I was able to polish up the social media share buttons on each post, fix up the ‘Related Posts’ section at the bottom of each post, and incorporate the footer design with the help of Stacy!

Remaining tasks:

Life & Letters

November 13, 2019 By Kevin Dao

Hi,

I’ve made good progress on Life and Letters this past week! Here’s the demo!

lal-demo2

Things that still need to be done:

  1. Header + footer
  2. Navigation menu
  3. Fix social media buttons (soon)
  4. Move ‘Related Posts’ below the squiggly separator
    1. Make sure it only shows 3 posts.
  5. Archive (still not sure what the client wants here)

Letters and Life

November 5, 2019 By Kevin Dao

Hello,

I’ve been working on Life and Letters within the past week, and have been able to make some d e c e n t progress! Here’s what we’re working with at the moment:

LaL-demo

In terms of what’s left to be done (in no particular order):

  1. Work with Stacy to move the img tag from the entry-content div to the header-div, similar to how it’s laid out on the homepage.
    • The image (purple box) needs to move up to the same level as the header (blue line).

  2. Restyle the featured post page
  3. Add header menu + footer
  4. Add squiggly separators between sections on the homepage

I’m really enjoying the project so far, and am excited to continue working with Stacy to see it through!

Until next time.

vLabs and Cascade Help Requests

October 30, 2019 By Kevin Dao

Hello,

In the past week, I’ve been working on Cascade help requests as well as some Canvasser modules. For the Cascade help requests, there’s a Sanskrit Gallery page that was transferred from an older platform onto Cascade. Through this process, the image descriptions became hidden from the user unless they hovered over the image with their cursor for a few seconds. The client wanted to add the description onto the image so that it’s easily visible. I went through and parsed out the descriptions (which contained HTML tags) and formatted it so that it’s easily readable. Here they are:

Also, I spent some time working on a Canvasser module (Lab 9 Section 6) which was missing popups for every data point on the graph.

For every point on the data table, I had to create an ‘overlay’ photo, as well as a popup window with the correct information from the original vLabs module. Frankly this was a little bit of a tedious process, but it was a nice change of pace to work in Photoshop for a bit!

Updates!

October 23, 2019 By Kevin Dao

Hello,

Recently, I’ve done handled some photo ID requests that were sent in. Here they are:

Also, I got some training on Canvasser (thanks @Estella!) and worked on my first two vLabs modules!

Lab 9 Section 6 – Humerofemoral Index and Locomotor Behavior: Interactive Graph (no idea what that means…)

Lab 10 Section 5 – An Interactive Plot of Positional Behaviors

Finally, I’ve been working with Stacy a good amount on getting Life and Letters set up. Through our pair development sessions, we’ve been able to establish a good starting point on the PHP that will allow me to jumpstart into the CSS (atleast for the homepage!) Here’s what the page looks like right now, visually and in HTML:

If you look closely at the HTML, you can see that we’ve been able to specify specific properties (number of posts, category type) for each “group” on the page.

These specific properties are useful because they’re what allows us to distinguish one group from another. Through the CSS, then, we can tell the browser that the entry-category-features group might have an image that’s large and centered, while theย entry-category-blog group might have smaller images that are left-aligned, and so on.

A big shoutout+thank you to Stacy for sitting down with me so often and guiding me through the intricacies of WordPress! By no means am I an expert now, but I’ve definitely gained a good chunk of knowledge ; – )

Bees and WordPress

October 9, 2019 By Kevin Dao

Hi,

Recently I’ve been working a bit on Cascade training, namely learning how to use HTML/CSS to create more advanced content such as tables, embedded videos, and pull quotes. I’ve also learned a bit about beekeeping since my Cascade page is themed around bees (why, I have no idea!) Here’s what it looks like.

I also got the chance to mess around with Photoshop a bit to create the bee-themed icons. Check out some of those videos by the way. They’re terrifying yet fascinating at the same time ๐Ÿ™‚

Aside from that bee-siness (ha), I got a high-level overview of WordPress and its theme functionality from Stacy. I also set up MAMP and WordPress on my personal laptop and cloned the entire Life and Letters database+content onto my local machine! It was pretty cool to learn about how WordPress utilizes a SQL database in order to keep all the configs like account information, plugin settings, and content. I don’t have too much experience with databases, so this project should be an interesting opportunity to learn more about those technologies ๐Ÿ™‚
