German Language Flyer and Vlabs Interactive Design

November 5, 2018 By Emily Park

German Language Program

The past couple shifts I continued on creating material to promote the German Language Program at UT. The first thing I did was create a poster made for digital display around campus using the same template as the last print poster I worked on. Just moved around a couple of items and changed the textual hierarchy and I was done!

Next I finished up on the German Language Program brochure/flyer which will be handed out at high schools to promote the program to prospective students. Duo made most of the brochure and its design. I just went in and added the text onto the back side of the flyer and made a couple edits at the client’s request.

Posters, Animations, and Mockups

Posters, Animations, and Mockups

In my last post I mentioned I wanted to revisit the illustration of the lightbulb I made for the German language poster. I though it looked too flat in comparison to the original image. So I started off my shift fixing it by adding more shading and highlights. I also created more of a curve to the bottom part of the bulb.

The left image is the original poster that I was tasked to recreate in a higher resolution. The middle image was my first draft where I thought the light bulb seemed too flat. Lastly, the image on the right shows what I came up with today after making minor changes. Overall, I think it looks a lot better!

Next, I worked on an animation assignment Tate gave me. My task was to add line work and coloring to the laundry hamper to make it look like it is is full of clothes.

Germanic Studies Poster

Germanic Studies Poster

I was tasked with making a hi-res version of a Germanic studies poster advertising its language courses.

This is what the poster looked like. I thought it would be pretty easy to recreate because it was such a simple layout; however, the light bulb proved to be a challenge for me. I will probably ask for Duo’s help in making a more realistic lightbulb but here is what I have for now.

Vlabs Mockup

Vlabs Mockup and Prototyping

I made my first mockup for the Vlabs UI design today. The mockups and prototyping are a very rough draft and only go over the home page but they show my main ideas for how I wanted to design the UI.

I like the idea of assigning a color and maybe an icon for each lab. I got these icons from The Noun Project but we would probably have to create our own.

And then it was time for prototyping! It is really tedious to do but I love seeing the webpage come to life.

Vlabs Design

Vlabs UI Design

Today I started developing my ideas for how I want the UI design for Vlabs to look. I began by looking at the already existing sites in our eAnthro suite. Suloni had suggested maybe finding a design element other than the dark shades to tie vlabs in with the other sites and create a cohesive experience when accessing these sites.

The sites in the eAnthro suite do have a heavy look because of the dark backgrounds and the bright look of Vlabs is refreshing and I don’t want to darken it. But looking through the sites I pulled some colors:

I want to keep the dark brown and tan to maintain some cohesion between the sites; however, they won’t be used  extensively but rather more as accent colors. There were also lots of colors I found within the eAnthro suite but I liked the colors above the best. They are bright and colorful but still have earthy and more subdued tones which seems fitting for an anthropology lab.

In addition, I noticed that all of the sites in the eAnthro suite utilize a colored bar as a design element. For example these bars found in the eFossils home page banner and the colored bar signifying a section within the site.

This is a design element I can definately bring over to Vlabs when housing the different labs and sections.

I am hoping to have a rough mockup by the end of Friday!

Animation

A Spinning Laundry Detergent Box

Today I mainly worked on creating a laundry detergent box for the Russian animations. I started with just the line work and Tate made it into this spinning animation!

Then I finished up by coloring and shading the object. I’m eager to see the box with its logo!

And You Guessed It…Vlabs!

I’m hoping to be done by Sunday and I’m going to start working on a new project regarding Vlabs

Project: Vlabs UI and Design
Client /Prof: Dr. Kappleman and Adrienne Witzel
Completion status: Started October 19 2018
Staff guidance: Suloni Robertson
STA team members: n/a
Description/plans: Design the Vlabs site’s navigation style, header, banner, and branding
To be completed: tbd

Anyways, here is an update of what the lab that I have been working on looks like. I now know everything there is to know about craniums.
