Texas Beyond History

Interactives

I’ve finished the rebuilds of Talking Hands and Parade animations. The Parade one was relatively simple, but the Talking Hands was probably the hardest interactive I’ve done yet. It involved adding many features to Canvasser which Ruben graciously added.

The hardest part to redo was this frame which involved a slider which controlled a mini map and the large map. You could then drag the mini map to move around the large map. This involved adding multiple constraints for each elements such as the slider position controlling the scale of the minimap and the large map. If you want to see the final version you can see it here: https://dev.texasbeyondhistory.net/st-plains/kids/talking/index.html

Texas Beyond History

We’re making more progress on Texas beyond history… I’ve started uploading the actual canvasser interactives to the dev website. This process involves removing the old code for the flash and replacing it with a canvasser div that looks something like:

Eventually all the interactives will be put in place this way.

Texas Beyond History

This will probably be a long post so bear with me. After the summer of being one of the only people working fully on TBH with Canvasser, Suloni asked me if I would like to take a lead role for TBH and create a team to work on and hopefully finish this long project. It was interesting to be involved in the hiring process and I was excited/scared to be leading a team. I am happy to say everyone is doing a great job and progress is going even faster than I could have imagined. The people working on TBH are smart, capable, and fun to work with and hopefully we can fully finish before winter break.

In the meantime I’ve also been working on interactives myself and here are some of the ones I’ve completed since the last time I posted:

Update French Italian grad posters

September 29, 2017 By Nick Lavigne

Another request I received was to update the website for the French/Italian grad program at UT. They had images representing the posters advertising the programs but the formatting was off and they were all different sizes. To fix this, Andre and I re-uploaded the posters and made them each into separate divs in html which allowed us to specify the correct size. I forgot to take a before screenshot but here is the result after:

Update Plan II video

September 29, 2017 By Nick Lavigne

I was requested to update the plan II video on http://liberalarts.utexas.edu/plan2/admission/index.php, because for some reason it had black bars on the top and bottom. Working with Andre we ended up using a Flex html plugin which allows us to embed youtube videos with widescreen formatting.

The code ended up looking like this:

<div class=”flex-video widescreen vimeo”><iframe width=”800″ height=”450″ allowfullscreen=”” frameborder=”0″ mozallowfullscreen=”” src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/7vktNhdGlA8″ webkitallowfullscreen=””></iframe></div>

And the result is here:

Launch of new LGBTQ Studies department and website

September 29, 2017 By Nick Lavigne

The College of Liberal Arts is launching a new program for 2017-2018 called LGBTQ Studies and they asked me to set up their website and make the banner for them. The department head had custom artwork done by a friend which was slightly challenging to put in the banner since the dimensions were way off. I ended up putting the two images side by side to create a wider version so that it could fit in the banner proportions requirements.  This was the result of that request:
