Vlabs Updates

October 29, 2019 By Estella Sun

The past few weeks I haven’t had stuff to update on here because I’ve just been doing vlabs work. But now that I’ve made substantial project, I’ll post the link here:

https://anthro-virtual-labs.development.la.utexas.edu/

  • I finally finished fixed the top navigation!! It took a while but now they are all clickable and other sections don’t overlap each other.
  • I started working on the side navigation and ran into a few issues. The colors kept seeming off to me, the link names were too long, and I realized that the Lab names don’t appear anywhere on the site outside of the side navigation menu.
  • Besides that, I’ve been adding media queries to start making the side more responsive.

Besides Vlabs, I’ve done some COLA IDs on the side. But other than that, nothing else new to report!

Aaaaand WE’RE BACK

October 2, 2019 By Estella Sun

It’s been one heck of a summer and first month of school, but I’m back and ready to work!

So far, I’ve only really been working on vlabs. First reviewing PSDs, creating PSDs, and now creating canvasser interactives. The grav site is really coming along! I’t’s nice to see how far the project has progressed since the last time I worked on it. As for the CSS, since Emily left, I’ll be implementing the UI design of the site. As of right now, we’re still figuring out the kinks of the mockup and how everything will look, but I’m excited to get started 🙂

Stacy’s also having me continue working on Learning Persian again. I’ll be working on making the site responsive and cleaning some parts of my code I did previously on dropdown menus and stuff. Should be fun!

Finally, I’ve been working on updating Cascade sites. Both the web admin help site and Dr. Beaver, a professor of Linguistics, with his page. Nothing too new here, I’ll just be updating his publications, making sure the links on the page are all working, and reorganizing all the citations on the page.

Rise of Everyday Design at the HRC!

April 30, 2019 By Estella Sun

For our STA meeting this week, Suloni had us visit the Rise of Everyday Design exhibition at the Harry Ransom Center. Here are some things that I thought were cool!

Glass Shots: It turns out people have been editing photos wayyy before the invention of Photoshop! Shown here is something called “Glass shots”. What they would do is set up a glass panel in front of the camera and have artists paint over the scene, and the camera would capture it.

Here is another example of old day photo editing. The original photo is displayed on top (notice the cat). Then the edited version is displayed on the bottom in the pamphlet (the cat’s gone!).

Negative Space & Ink: While these images are pretty simple looking, I liked the waves of the lines and the contrast between the white and black ink.

Photography: This image was an old photograph from the late ’30s. This piece caught my eye because it seemed really modern for such an old image (photographers today are still doing things like this)!

Print Design: This is a poster that was part of the exhibition that I thought was interesting. It had an interesting vintage yet modern feel about it. The lines and typeface was really nice to look at.

Architecture: This is an image of one of Frank LLoyd Wright’s designs. This part of the exhibition spoke to me because I actually went to one of his houses in Chicago. I remember it being really beautiful and modern. His incorporation of nature into his designs is super aesthetic and unique.

Morris & Co:  Nothing too crazy here, but I really liked looking at these fabric designs. I wish I had some in my apartment!

Kelmscott Press & Typeface: The rest of these images show printed books with some really pretty fonts.

Reflection

One of the first pieces I saw in the exhibition was the glass shot. This particular piece was super interesting to me because it really showed how innovative artists and photographers were. The idea of painting on glass on top of a natural scene has a very imaginative and almost childlike aspect to it. This also really spoke to me because it’s clear how this idea has been translated through time to Photoshop. It’s really cool to see the history of photo-editing and the creative aspects to it.

I also really enjoyed looking at and learning about the Kelmscott press and various typefaces that were created along with it. The books and fonts that were displayed were sooo beautiful. There was even a whole page that looked like a painting! I would love to have a book like that. Fun fact: I also learned that the first letter of each chapter that gets enlarged is called an “initial”. The typefaces especially, it was really cool to see how some of the fonts that we use today are still reminiscent of the ones displayed!

Overall, I’m happy Suloni gave us the chance to see this exhibit! It’s been a while since I’ve just relaxed and went to a museum environment. I enjoyed this experience and learned things I didn’t expect to!

Learning Persian

I’ve made significant progress on the Learning Persian site (video below). During these past weeks, I’ve added dropdowns and logos and other details. I even learned how to use Terminal to upload images into the server!

Here’s Jac & Kathy’s XD:

And here’s the progress I’ve made so far (link below):

Vlabs

I also worked on more Vlab assets:

STA Presentation

I also went to and presented at my first ever STA presentation! All the presentations were super cool, and it was awesome to get to learn about what the video and audio STAs have done. I presented on the topic of Set Designs. Suloni helped a lot with streamlining my keynotes slides, and I loved getting to showcase a little bit of what Design and Coding STAs do. Hopefully, I get to present again next year! Thanks LAITS for this great experience <3

New Project!!!

March 11, 2019 By Estella Sun

Stacy has assigned me a new project! He asked me to his office and told me about a few projects and what skills I am interested in developing. After some conversation, we agreed to put me on Learning Persian!

Learning Persian is a website that includes textbooks and supplementary material for the Persian class at UT. There are two parts of the new website that we are developing: 1) The WordPress side and 2) the PHP side. The WordPress site contains modules and other things (that Nick had worked on previously).

I am working on the PHP side (that isnt being built using WordPress). So far I’ve done a lot of CSS and HTML to make the site look like Jac & Kathy’s design.

A Break from the Usual

February 18, 2019 By Estella Sun

I took a break from Vlabs and Theatre of Philosophy this week to work on some other more urgent projects that came up.

First was Racial Geography tour. I joined Suloni and Stacy in their meeting with the Liberal Arts PR team and clients. There, Stacy demonstrated what was completed on the website and they talked about plans for launch. Listening in was a really good way to learn more about the project.

After we got back, I was assigned to make some mockups for the remaining un-styled parts of the site for Stacy.

Home Page that includes introductory info, instructions, and an orientation video.

After RGT was done I worked on mostly cascade things. First I created the web presence for ISLD.

And I edited some articles in the STA knowledge base.

Finally, I worked on implementing a custom css bit onto the LAITS website: https://liberalarts.utexas.edu/laits/services/computer-support/index.php

This assignment was actually given to me before Andre left. I had written some code for him to implement using his special permissions, but he left before finishing.
