Character Animation in After Effects

Character Animation in After Effects

Over the last few days, I have been exploring character animation in After Effects and have been able to pick up some cool tricks and have found some useful plugins that I hope to explore these more for character animation in After Effects. Below is a few versions of a super simple walk cycle, where I experimented with various effects within the program to add interest/texture.

Stretchy Face Animation Test

Stretchy Face Animation Test

Spent some time the last couple of days watching tutorials on Lynda and working on a character head movement that featured more elatistic facial features and angle changes in space. I imagine the character saying “Whaaaaaaaa-?” The green is the rough first pass and the black are the more refined lines.

Last Animations of RUS412K

Last Animations of RUS412K

Here are the last of the last (as far as I know) of the animations for RUS412K. I’ve been working on this project since I started at LAITS, and while there will be some touch ups here and there, it feels pretty weird essentially finishing this project. The looping animations are gifs, so click ’em to see ’em move!

RUS412K Animation Dump

RUS412K Animation Progress!

Just sharing some more progress I’ve made on the Russian Animations. Once again, click on the images to see them move! Here’s the Young Girl character walking to the sink to be used in the animations where she washes her hands and brushes her teeth:

And the hand washing animation is essentially done now, too:

I also pretty much finished the dish cleaning POV animation:

And nearly finalized this pick up clutter animation. There’s a little extra BTS here; I forgot to hide the layer when I exported but when a character is going to be moving around a lot I’ll often drop all of the angles on one layer for easier access:

And last but not least, I made significant progress on this clothes washing animation. Couldn’t fit the character angles on the frame like the last animation, but peep the hair poking out on the bottom of the frame:

It’s still going to be some good work to get these finalized before Dr. Rice needs them, but we’re well on our way!

412K Washing Hands Animation Progress

412K Washing Hands Animation Progress

Got some good work done on the handwashing animation this week as well! Using some of the water flow assets I had already created for the showering animation, I created running water for the sink (even though I already had many assets for this, animating it is still pretty brutal; elemental animation is tufffffff!) Click on them for the motion:

Then I added the hand movement:

Now I need to go back through and add the soap/water interaction. This is probably the most complicated part of the animation, so that’s why I saved it for last.
