Anxiety and Stress Site & OCIL & Grav Documentation

Anxiety and Stress Site & OCIL & Other Things

The Anxiety and Stress Clinic mockups

This is a project I have been assigned to complete through this summer that I am very excited to be working on. We are working to develop a new website for Dr. Jasper Smits that seeks to combine two existing sites for the Anxiety and Stress Clinic and Research Lab into one cohesive site. I have met with Maddy a few times to discuss the team’s goals and needs, and these were the main goals I identified:

  1. automation – making processes like finding information on the clinic/clinicians, scheduling sessions, and booking appointments through the client portal more self-enabled
  2. combining two websites – the lab and the clinic access, similar to that of psychwire.com, making it very easy to navigate between the two different offerings through a common entry page
  3. theme – creating a theme/visual identity that suits the clinic’s prominent and growing reputation as a trustworthy research lab and clinic for anxiety and stress. Ensure that the aesthetic decisions are executable by web-developers through use of grids, alignment, and knowledge of WordPress functionality
  4. clarity and consistency – increased clarity on things like the mission statement, photography, service offerings, team bio

—

With these goals in mind, I spent some time browsing through wordpress themes available to us to see if any themes would work well with the clinic’s needs. The cool thing about this project is that it involves a coordinated effort with web developers such as Lauren and Ruben, and in the process I have learned quite a bit about what web development and design for web development. For example, things such as body content, appearance, fonts, and styles are likely more customizable with CSS, but elements such as navigation headers and footers are less. Understanding these concepts and keeping the team’s goals in mind helped streamline the search for themes and ultimately started mocking up a few pages based on the Essence and Slush themes.

—

I then spent some time mocking up a few of the key pages in Figma. Figma is a digital prototyping tool that I’ve spent some time working on as an STA. So far, I have learned more about using grids and text styles to ease the process. I realized that the challenge for me here was that I did not have much experience with web development, so I did not quite understand what could and could not be changed from a WordPress theme; therefore, I was somewhat rigid with my application of the theme. Here are the initial mockups:

—

Here are the later mockups that I worked on after discussing with Maddy a technique for blocking out content on pages and planning web design. I had been developing the mockups using a technique that Maddy said Abriella told her about in which you initially design in grayscale to ensure high contrast design for accessibility. We also met with Lauren earlier to discuss Lauren developing a “sandbox” for us to try out using themes in wordpress, which was very cool. For now, we are taking a break on these mockups because Ruben and Lauren are discussing whether or not we will use WordPress or Grav/Gantry 5 to develop this new website. I will talk about Grav later.

The OCILL Project

I am spending about half of my time also assisting with the OCILL project that I think Miguel is spearheading but almost everyone else is also helping with. We are transferring content from Dr. Okur’s original website for Turkish language courses. This page holds semester assignments and exercises, and the professor would like this content to be moved over to Canvas since the site will be going out of date. There is this spreadsheet of many many weeks of pages and exercises that are primarily two kinds of activities: audio grids and fill-in-the-blanks (FIBs). We self assign these pages, and we are aiming to finish before the summer ends. Audio grids involve downloading files and creating a grid for vocabulary purposes. Fill in the blanks require Quiz functionality in Canvas, and we are still working through some problems with understanding how to create lines for plain text information. This picture below is an example of an audio grid page:

—

There are a few main challenges so far. One challenge is that it is kind of a tedious process organizing and downloading the content that needs to be transferred. There are many audio files and html files to keep track of. Additionally, we often run into challenges with Canvas limitations, document titling confusion, and general functionality confusion that took a little bit of collaborative troubleshooting since Miguel and Dr. Okur were on vacation. Luckily, this has worked so far. Also, Miguel developed a great workflow document that made it easier for us to join in on the project quickly. Poonum and Angie have made comprehensive documentation of our challenges and questions, too.

Grav Documentation

As mentioned, we have been talking with Ruben and Lauren about the possibility of using Grav to develop websites. Grav is a simple CMS with no database. This is potentially applicable to the Stress and Anxiety Lab as well as the LatinX Pop Lab that Ingrid is working on, but it is also just an initiative that would be relevant to future STAs as the Gantry 5 element of Grav allows for simpler and more intuitive website creation for STAs with less coding experience. The Gantry 5 element allows for block editing that can be supplemented with custom CSS. De’Sha, Maddy, and I had a meeting with Ruben to set up Grav, which requires some connection to MAMP that the downloading of Git and Docker. To be honest, I am still confused about how everything works, but we are working through it. De’Sha and I will be working on documentation for this Grav setup and exploration process for future STAs. Also I am still running into some challenges that I will be working through that might involve Norton.

Fun Times Tuesday

And as a fun tidbit, here is some info on Fun Times Tuesdays! Since all the STAs are online during our Tuesday meetings, we decided to use our meeting time this week for team bonding, which has been so fun in lieu of in-person interaction. Here are some screen caps from things we’ve done and also from the time we pranked Valerie after came back from her vacation to “Paris.” We have done team pixel art, played Club Penguin, presented on our unpopular opinions, and done a virtual website “pub crawl.” I feel closer to my fellow STAs and I truly love these days!

Super long blog post, I am sorry. I need to make more frequent posts!

Orientation Virtual Vacation, Image Resource Banner, and Anxiety Clinic

June 7, 2021 By Athena Zeng

Orientation Virtual Vacation, Image Resource Banner, and Anxiety Clinic

Last week, I worked on a few projects.

For the orientation virtual vacation, I thought I was going to need to do more animation, but another STA from the video department ended up taking most of that along with Miguel. I did help edit and make a few graphic assets, though.  With an original still from the Study Habits video from the winter, I updated the calendar to read October and created a map to replace what was originally a whiteboard. This helped make the video more cohesive with the theme of language and travel. I also created a marquee that flips to read COLA and Now Boarding. Miguel later animated these in After Effects.

I also worked on the edits Suloni suggested for the Copyright Free Image Resources guide. I started off by making this banner, which uses images from Unsplash arranged in a way that is supposed to resemble camera aperture in the center. I’m still working on incorporating imagery into the guide.

Regarding the anxiety clinic project, I am looking through for WordPress Themes that will work for developers . Most of the first few themes I found were a little too business-y in nature, so I have been looking again for some different themes, particularly in the StudioPress premium category, which I just realized LAITS was subscribed to. I was advised to exercise caution since not all of the themes are well constructed or supported. I have been looking at things like ratings, reviews, and downloads to help gauge credibility.

Lecture Title Slide and Other Things

June 1, 2021 By Athena Zeng

Lecture Title Slide and Other Things

Hello! This past week, I worked on a few things like the Lecture Title Slide, additional buttons for HS 301, and the copyright free image guide on Cascade. The following are the additional style B buttons created for HS 301.

The Lecture Title Slide was a continuation of Bridget’s efforts from last summer. She created the style and theme, which involved a color scheme of mostly blue, neon yellow, and black hues for the stinger style slides. Using her files, I tried to understand how she created her designs (which were a mix of effects, masks, and stamps) and further clarified things with Maddy and Poonum. After mixing some more strokes, textures, and hue type effects, I created the cloud version below for the Close Reading Close-Up. The following copies are other textures I experimented with.

I also spent some time working on a Figma tutorial last week, for the UI/UX. I used some bold typography to make the page look more “high-end,” as the client brief specified, but I forgot about the color scheme in the brief. When I have some more time, I will make the edits regarding things like the amount of white space, alignment, grids, and color that Maddy pointed out in feedback.

I also helped with some photo IDs and recorded a few clips of myself for the orientation pre-roll. The photo IDs were pretty standard, except one was a little poorly lit and lower in quality, so I messed around with brightness levels and warmth to improve the balance of color. I haven’t made a post in a while, but those were most of the highlights! I also graduated!

HS 301 Course Graphics and STA Presentation

HS 301 Course Graphics and STA Presentation

I took some time off of work last week to focus on some of my final projects! But while I was at work, I worked on a couple things like fine-tuning the formatting of the Cascade Page Layout Design Guide and this course graphics package for HS 301: Intro to Health & Society. This was an interesting request because the professor wanted her picture on the slide. It also took a while to reach the concept of a downstream river as a representation of the course. Initially, I was going for some more health and hospital type appearances, but the professor stated that she wanted something more representative of society instead. Abriella provided guidance for the final layout, suggesting a color overlay and adjustments to the standard course graphics appearance.

I have also been finalizing what I want to say during my STA presentation! It’s a little tricky because the project is still in process, but that shouldn’t be a big deal. I will be presenting on the UT Oxford Project, which is a government response tracker of COVID-19- related policies.

WP Clone Testing, Case Page Layout Design Guide

April 19, 2021 By Athena Zeng

WP Clone Testing, Case Page Layout Design Guide

Hi! These are some of the tasks I spent the last week working on.

WP Clone Testing

Sheryl and I spent some time assisting Ruben with a WordPress task. Here is the request.

Would you guys be able to help me out with a wordpress task? I am creating a workflow to move WP sites off our servers and into Docker. This should make them more secure. I have a site http://notevenpast.development.la.utexas.edu/ that is a clone of https://notevenpast.org/ – I need some STA(s) to look at the sites and compare them to see if they function identically from a user perspective and also for an editor.

Ruben just needed a second/third pair of eyes to go through a clone he made of the notevenpast.org website. We spent some time comparing the clone and the original site from a user’s perspective by clicking on links and testing functionalities, such as the ability to subscribe to a the page’s newsletter through the clone. We then did the same thing, but from an author’s perspective. Some of the functionalities we tested out were making pages, posts, and publishing. There were some little things that we found, but for the most part it was all good! I hope it helped Ruben.

Case Page Layout Design Guide

We are looking to have an instruction guide on the COLA page that will inform our users of different stylistic features they can employ to make their sites more visually enhanced.

Abriella walked me through a task (the brief is above). Based on a practice page Abriella set up, I spent some time taking screenshots and writing some instructions on the options available to users when editing their Cascade pages. These instructions give a little bit of guidance on dimensions, organizational tips, and color variety. I’ve included some of the screenshots as an example, and the topics covered encompassed:

  • Banner (dimensions included)
  • Photos (minimum dimensions and DPIs)
  • Colored bars on the right side of the page.
  • Various ways to embed a video (box, youtube, right side, in body text)
  • Fonts Headings and Text Wrapping
  • Pullquotes
  • URL linked images
  • Page breaks

I also spent some time writing up a project summary for the religiology logo that I worked on last semester. What a throwback!

Outside of being an STA, I have just been doing my school work and occasionally going outside. I’ve also been trying to journal a little bit more because I find it entertaining to read back on old thoughts and write on paper. However, I am finding it difficult to read my handwriting. ALSO I watched two episodes Mononoke…… it’s pretty creepy but it’s so nice to look at. I’ve been thinking, and I think my newfound interest in anime was birthed out of a need for escapism as a result of the pandemic.

HIS 315K Course Package, UI/UX Training, Project Summaries, Cascade Help Request

April 12, 2021 By Athena Zeng

HIS 315K Course Package, UI/UX Training, Project Summaries, Cascade Help Request

HIS 315K Course Package

Last week, I completed a course graphics package for HIS 315K. We were asked to use the image below, with several historical figures. It is very action-packed, and there is a lot of symbolism behind the behavior and body language of the subjects. Traditionally, the color bar would be placed near the bottom of the Canvas Dashboard and Banner; however, Maddy and Suloni approved a different positioning that would allow viewers to see/understand all the subjects in the picture. That is why the color bar is higher than normal. Also, I was having some trouble with the burnt orange color bars. The color of the dashboard and banner appeared to be slightly different from the canvas callout buttons, despite the hex code being the same and all documents being set RGB settings. At Megan’s suggestion, I tried changing everything to PNGs to no avail. I also tried changing the dpi of the documents at Suloni’s suggestion. I ended up using another suggestion of Megan’s to manually adjust the color of the banner and dashboard from a screenshot, and that worked. Below are the canvas assets and the design menu.

UI/UX Training

I began working on the UI/UX basic training. Here is my wireframe using pen and paper. I chose the Spicewoods Floral mock client, and I will continue mocking up the website on Figma. This website is for a luxury client who wants users to be funneled towards her communication channels. I got inspiration from random clothing retailers online who I felt also catered to luxury audiences.

Project Summaries

I also took a bit of time on Friday to write up project summaries for the Wellness project I worked on over winter break, the KB trainings I have been working on, and a personal project I have been doing with COVID policy tracking. I think the next stage is that they need to be approved. Eventually, they will become some sort of presentation that all STAs are invited to watch.

Cascade Help Request

This morning, I also helped replace a banner for the Department of Air Force Science Cascade page. The new banner is pictured below. I went into the Cascade editor, uploaded the picture to the dept banners folder in units, replaced the old photo, and published the changes. This was the first time I have used Cascade since the basic training last semester, so I had to update the VPN system we use to log in remotely.

Outside of work new: I got vaccinated! I hope everything will improve soon, for both those in the US and globally. Also, I realized that the Orange Bike Project on campus, where I got my craigslist bike fixed, is open! So I scheduled an appointment for this coming Thursday, and hopefully I can get my bike fixed again.
